Introduction
Mat 24:3 YLT And when he is sitting on the mount of the Olives, the disciples came near to him by himself, saying, `Tell us, when shall these be? and what is the sign of thy presence, and of the full end of the age?' Christ's return was to take place at the culmination of the last days of the age. It is therefore important not only to identify the timeline of 'the last days', but also 'the age' in question.
The last days neither referred to the end of time, nor to the end of the world. The last days were those prior to the end of the Old Covenant Age in AD 70. Allow me the opportunity to explain.

Because of opinions about things that are uncertain to them and the wrong headed idea that they are worth arguing about.
just a hunch.
jesus is coming. look busy.
I think people are referring to the Rapture (yes, I know that specific word is not in the Bible), which will mark the end of the ‘Church Age’ or the Age of Grace, and usher in the Tribulation and a return to being under the Law.
Oh come on. People have believed that the end times will occur during their lifetime for a couple thousand years, no need to rain on their parade... I guess that’s only something many can only be sure of when they are on their death bed. ;)
These sure aren’t “the good old days”
I agree completely with this line of reasoning. It “fits” all of the Biblical references. The “end of the age” is often confused with the end of time. Jesus came to fulfill (complete) the Old Covenant, which was based upon obedience to the law, and replace it with a New Covenant based upon faithfulness to the completed work of Jesus. Thus, we have been fully restored to the place Adam and Eve had before they sinned.
Alleluia!!
What hugely ramped it up was Israel becoming a nation again. Nobody saw that coming.

It’s not our call, noob.
Seems so.
Not the end of time or the end of the age, the Rapture and the 2nd coming of Jesus is a new beginning. Time will still continue, but it will be God’s time.
The passage in question refers to the disciples asking three distinct questions Christ answers all three. We need to be careful not misconstrue the answers nor the questions out of context.
- “not one stone left on the other”- referring to either or both the destruction of the Temple or His death-
which prompts them to ask:
1. “When will this ( no stone left upon the other)happen?”
2. “what will be the sign of your coming?”
3.”and of the end of the age?”
We can follow along easily for a bit, but then things seem to get complicated or out of sequence- but they are not.
Christ describes things leading up the each point of question-the destruction of the Hebrew temple- 70AD is a verifiable fact. Along with the several descriptive pictures of the terrors that would befall the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Next He describes the facts regarding His return- a hidden fact only known by the Father God. He admonishes us all to watch and be aware-until He comes. The faithful will be waiting with trimmed wicks and not asleep-even though many will say “here and there He is”.
Finally, the end of the age- I may be a bit obtuse on this point- but I think the destruction of the Temple and the “end of the age” are about the same over-arching topic- the end of the Mosaic method of temple worship- the end of the Jewish ( more appropriately called Hebrew)and the full on era or age of the Church period - not meaning the organized 501c3 stuff, but rather the literal body of Christ on earth.
Here it seems we depart the old covenant worship model and se the end of Temple offerings etc, and now enter the age of the believer as the living sacrifice via faith in the Righteousness of Christ.
To me all the rest of the eschatological (end times) discussion is moot- live for Christ and witness until he comes, or we go.
He gave us a mission and told us to persevere. When He gives us a new order, fine. Until then, execute the last known mission.
No one knows when God will pull the plug. Every day could be potentially the “end times”. Christ’s prophecies about the “end of the age” already came to pass. “History” is circular too which I guess could be a sign.
If you’re really interested in learning about why these are considered to be the last days, watch a few videos here: http://thebibleprophecywatchers.org/.
I've got to disagree with you somewhat, The nation Israel created in the 20th century has nothing to do with the Israel of the Old Testament other then the both have the same name, and have individuals running around attempting to be like Old Testament Jews even though genetically they have nothing to do with each other. Jesus Christ destroy the first century Old Jewish empire in AD 70. Jesus Christ did not restore that Old Kingdom. The nation of Israel created in the 20th century is a creation of people that do not have a true linage genetically to the Old past. The 20th century Jewish creation might think they are part of the 1st century Jewish kingdom but it is just wishful thinking.
Oh come on. People have believed that the end times will occur during their lifetime for a couple thousand years, . . . . .

I think this is a little wrong, I think people in many ages have “hoped” for the last days and Christ’s return.
People in many ages have observed the events of their day and wondered how much longer Christ could put off His return but when you look at the way people lived it is unlikely they really believed He would return during their lifetimes.
I think the same is true today. People say it couldn’t get any worse than it is right now. Those people however do not really believe it because they are still eating, drinking and making merry. It can get much worse and will.
If you ever find a group of people who are truly engaged in Christian activity, helping each other, taking care of the poor widows and fatherless, teaching Christ and preaching to the world you might want to sit up and take notice, they may know something we don’t.
I am not speaking of Socialism or Communism. Those “isms” say they practice all the virtues but do not nor do they give the credit to Christ.
When some group comes along and does all these things in the name of Christ we might want to pay attention. At that point I might become more convinced that He will soon return.
...establishing Israel (Which was constantly being lobbied to British authorities before and after WWI) was only a matter of time.
