Funeral held at Catholic Church for boy killed by alligator in Florida

A private funeral service has been held in Nebraska after fatal alligator attack at Disney World last week

The funeral of a two-year-old boy killed in an alligator attack in Florida has been held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nebraska.

Lane Thomas Graves was on holiday with his family at the Disney World resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida when he was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator.

The boy’s father attempted to fight the beast off but was unable to rescue his son who subsequently drowned.

A Mass service was held in Lane’s hometown of Omaha on Monday in a private ceremony for family and friends.

According to the church’s website, the Graves family are members of the St. Patrick’s community and the boy’s older sister, Ella, attends their school.

A statement from Lane’s parents, Matt and Melissa, was also published on the church website. The couple write: “[We] are overwhelmed with the support and love we have received from family and friends in our community as well as from around the country.”

The family have set up the Lane Thomas Foundation in his memory. On the foundation website his parents say: “Losing Lane has broken our hearts in the worst possible way. While there is no way to mend our hearts, we can do good work in his honour.”

Donations received will go to a range of local charities in Omaha.

They had a lawyer on one of the morning talk radio stations in New York City last week. He had an interesting take on this. He figures Disney is absolutely liable in this case for two reasons:

1. All of the bodies of water around that resort hotel are man-made and are part of the resort, which means they are held to a higher legal standard than if the hotel was on a beach along the Atlantic Ocean or a natural lake.

2. Legally, a resort property must provide protection and warnings to their guests commensurate with the local knowledge that their guests could reasonably be expected to have. This means that a resort catering to local visitors can reasonably expect its visitors to know about local weather and wildlife. A Disney resort, on the other hand, is marketed across the entire globe to potential visitors who don't have a clue about the local dangers in that area.

Interestingly enough, the lawyer also said that Disney's own insurance carrier (or their internal risk management team, if they are self-insured) is probably down there right now going through the entire resort to identify hazards, and coming up with a plan to get rid of the alligators or drain the lake and canals.

Are you saying that 2 year old children’s feet should never touch the ground? That they must be carried at all times or placed in a stroller? He was next to his father at a Disney event when he got taken by the alligator.

I find this, along with repeated FBI failures in the war on Islamic terror, to reflect our societal incompetence.

In WWII we defeated several enemy nations in about 3 1/2 years, on several continents. On decisively they have been trouble free, and now are our allies.

Now we near 15 years since 9/11/2001 and it is going backwards. Our fighters’ lives have been for nothing.
Our leaders tell us is going well, when it is not. And they tell us it is too hard.

Human safety at zoos is not brain surgery, and yet we seem incapable of the most simple arrangements.

One lesson is watch out for yourself and your family. Do not trust others’ to have done their jobs adequately.

He was wading, ok? You keep on the beach if the signs say NO Swimming, ok? You don’t wade, you don’t swim, you keep alert. And you certainly don’t wade at 9:30m at night, ok???

The child was not swimming. He was holding his fathers hand in 6 to 12 inches of water. It was a beach for heavens sake, so why create an illusion of a safe sandy beach if it can’t even be waded in at waters edge? I get the no swimming signs and if they don’t want to scare the kids with alligator signs, how about......”don’t go near the water” which is ridiculous.

There won’t be any litigation here. I’ve seen cases like this — albeit none as bizarre — and there’s no doubt in my mind that Disney will approach the family very soon with an offer of an enormous amount of money — and they’ll be willing to go higher — in exchange for releasing Disney from further liability. The offer will be so rich that the family’s own lawyer will advise them to agree to it and it all will be settled very quickly, with no details ever becoming public. Count on it: no lawsuit will be filed.

Undoubtedly, you will be correct. But don’t cry when Disney World goes out of business and your children and grandchildren whine that they have no place to go to. Try taking them to Gettysburg, Washington’s Crossing and the Alamo as we did as children.

There is a huge difference between wading , which is walking with your feet in the water and swimming. No swimming signs are posted because of dangerous currents, deep water, underwater hazards. There was no “do not enter the water” signs, which is more accurate. Have you been to a tropical resort, wearing nice clothes after dinner, and taken off your sandals while your toes are in the water ?Do you call that swimming? Are you from an area that you don’t know the difference? People who are raised near the water know that there is a big difference between wading and swimming.

Disney is not going to go out of business on account of this horrible accident. Disney will pay the family a huge sum of money, but it will be covered by insurance and the legal fees won’t be too crazy because this will never go to trial. In fact, no lawsuit ever will be filed. People can quibble all they like about whether the parents should have been wading with the children in this lagoon, but there is no way Disney is going to want a public fight with the grieving parents of a toddler who was eaten by a bloody alligator that came out of one of Disney’s own lagoons.

Disney World fired American workers and replaced them with H1b workers. I don’t care what happens to Disney. They have enough money to pay this family for their loss.

In the dark at 9:30 at night - when gators are searching for their next meal.

At around mid-day I came cross a gator at Disney World who when I took one petrified look at him slithered back where he came from. Taught me a lot!

I don’t blame this family. At all. What happened was an unforeseen tragedy. But don’t ignore No Swimming signs and don’t come to Florida or our state parks in the northwest and expect nature to be kind. It is not. It is the exact opposite of Rouseeau’s theory if we bothered to read him.

I went to EuroDisney. Pretty sure there were no alligators. Moozies, but no gators.

i am from Hawaii, you are from New York. Listen to people who have lived next to bodies of water. You don’t know what you are talking about.

I’ve been to WDW any number of times (including its opening weekend in 1971) and never once considered alligators being on the grounds.

Fine. I don’t recall in all my time at Disney World as an employee I ever met a non-American employee. They may have been there but they must have been legal.

They can very well afford to pay this family but don’t doubt that others will be looking to file suit - maybe ‘cause lightening struck while they were climbing out of that clean and alligator-free pool that overruns Disney World hotels.

Sadly, I remember when conservatives and republicans believed in tort reform. The younger ‘conservatives’ believe, along with leftists, that you get as you can you steal.

You obviously have not read the news thatDisney fired its IT department, replaced them with H1b workers, and in order to get severance pay the American workers had to train their replacements. Trump has used this Disney H1b issue in his campaign.
This pond was not a natural pond, but a man made pond by Disney. Since it is a man made pond surrounding a resort ( with beach chairs )you should expect a safe environment. This was not a natural feature. By placing beach chairs around the pond, they made an attractive nuisance.
There are a lot of frivolous lawsuits out there, but Disney showed sheer disregard for visitor safety.
