America's Catholic bishops came together Monday to project an image of unity, after a Vatican meeting on the family unleashed an uproar over the direction of the church.
Last month's gathering in Rome on more compassionately ministering to families featured open debate alarming many traditional Catholics, who argued it would undermine public understanding of church teaching. Pope Francis encouraged a free exchange of ideas at the assembly, or synod, in contrast to previous years, when such events were tightly scripted.
At a meeting Monday in Baltimore, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, signaled there was no conflict between a gentler approach and upholding church orthodoxy. Kurtz cited his home visits to parishioners, where he wouldn't give them "a list of rules to follow firsthand," but would instead "spend time with them trying to appreciate the good that I saw in their hearts," before inviting them to follow Christ.
"Such an approach isn't in opposition to church teachings. It's an affirmation of them," said Kurtz, who attended the Vatican gathering.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, who also participated in the Vatican gathering, emphasized that last month's meeting was only the start of a discussion before a larger gathering on the family next year, where bishops will more concretely advise the pope on developing any new church practices. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the divisiveness he read in media accounts did not reflect the collegial discussion inside the event.
"It was a synod of consensus," Dolan said. The pope, he said, has a God-given gift "for attentive listening."
The bishops made the remarks at their fourth national meeting since Francis was elected. While many Catholics have praised Francis' new emphasis on mercy over the culture wars, many theological conservatives have said Francis is failing to.....

How can there be damage to control? Someone doesn't believe what he preaches, "the gates of hell" yada yada yada.
He missed his calling, that of the affable Irish bartender someplace.
Anxiety? Why? The Pope’s infallible, right?
Once upon a time, I had respect for this pope.
So much for papal infallibility. This one can’t even read and understand his Bible.
The Church's 2,000 year history is nothing but a story of damage control.
"The gates of hell", yada, yada, yada....is not a promise that the Church will be free of conflict, persecution or heretics.
Quite the contrary. It's a promise that through all of this, the faith will be preserved somehow, somewhere until the coming of Jesus.
When he speaks ex cathedra.
That's happened twice in the past 150 years.
Cardinal Wuerl insists on giving Communion to Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, John Kerry, lesbians, gay couples, and adulterers. Cardinal Burke has proven that doing so is a mortal sin. The Pope is on Wuerl’s side.
This is known as “consensus.” Move along. Nothing to see hear.
Our local priests do that for us ALL THE TIME during the daily Mass homilies. And it's my read to listen to them rather than to a media troll moll (as in "gansta" moll).
We don't need any of the likes of a Ms. Zoll as an intermediary. Are you shocked? I doubt it! :o)
marshmallow: When he speaks ex cathedra.
cloudmountain: And THAT is when he speak of FAITH and MORALS only, nothing else.
Isn't it interesting how many non-Catholics here seem to HANG on EVERY word the Pope says?
Why would they?
What is he to them?
Why would they care?
You'd think that they would TOTALLY ignore him and whatever he says because his words are not germane to them in any way, shape or form. Or, they SHOULDN'T be.
Methinks they protest TOO much.
It catches our attention since it tends to prove what so many of us have been saying: Frank is a phony.
The "One True Church" is convulsing in its socialist, anti-Biblical, scandal-laden death throes. You don't think this interests real believers?
It's an opportunity to open peoples' eyes to a real saving faith in Christ - not Mary, not dead humans, not gay priests wearing dresses - the only savior of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Methinks they protest TOO much.
You can have a Pope.. it’s legal.. who cares?.. or should care..
Anyone can have a Pope.. by whatever name/designation...
The problem is... is He “THE Pope” or “A Pope”..
It’s also legal to have no Pope..
Many have no need of a Pope.. or even a Bishop.. or Nun
Protesting “them”... may just be a personal choice..
Anxiety? Why? The Popes infallible, right?
When he speaks ex cathedra.
That’s happened twice in the past 150 years

I do take note of the USA's Catholic bishops, whose positions, except on the pelvic issues, are identical to those of the Democrat Party, except in those cases where the Democrats are more conservative.
You’ve never been taught by a Jesuit, have you?
The one I was taught by was very orthodox and straight. In fact he had been a WWII chaplain.
True, it MUST be a personal choice.
Perhaps they just need a whipping boy in their lives. S'okay with me. WHIP away. Didn't Jesus predict...?
Oh, never mind, you get my gist.

The Hindu faith has 100 "pontiffs."

"Uncertainty over Hindu pontiffs meeting"
Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati, TUDA denies permission citing security issues; pontiffs threaten to hold meeting in front of the Islamic University building
With just two days to go for the Hindu Garjana, a sense of stalemate hangs over the proposed meeting of 100 Hindu pontiffs and leaders drawn from five southern States, as the event organiser Tirumala Tirupati Pavitratha Samrakshana Vedika struggles to find a venue.
==============================================
*Notice the threat regarding holding the 100 Hindu Pontiffs meeting in front of the Islamic University building
**GREEN is the most preferred color of Islam. The country with the most Muslims is Indonesia. Most Muslims are not Arabs or middle easterners but ASIANS.
Those poor ole pontiffs can't even find a place to gather and meet. Tough times in Hindu-Muslim India.
***"Garjana" or गर्जना means "thunderous sound" in their languages. I guess that meeting will be the 100 pontiffs very loudly and emphatically confirming their Hindu faith.
100 "pontiffs" just for one part of southern India? Hmmmm, I thought WE had problems. Maybe "pontiff" means "bishop" for them.
From Wikipedia:
Inspiration for the Christian use of the name "pontiff" for a bishop could be found in the use of the same word (in Latin, pontifex, not "pontifex maximus") for the Jewish High Priest in the Vulgate Latin translation of the Scriptures, where it appears 59 times.
For example, in the Vulgate Mark 15:11, "pontifices" (plural) is the Latin term used for "The Chief Priests", and in the Letter to the Hebrews "pontifex" (singular) is repeatedly used with reference to the Jewish High Priest and analogously to Jesus as the High Priest of Christians.
The word has been employed in English also for caliphs (Islam) and swamis and jagadgurus (Hinduism)

No, I can’t say that I have — and I confess I have no clue how that question might be relevant to my post to which you offered it as a reply.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain royal robes. Any embarrassing quotes are the result of (1) an internet hoax (2) He was mistranslated (3) It was taken out of context and (4) (my favorite) is he wasn't speaking ex cathedra. This means he can lie his azz off or praise the devil or even blaspheme and it is okay. Now say it with me, "It's okay".
