The Ark: Could Noah's Tale Be True?

The new film "Noah" stars Russell Crowe as the man chosen by God to collect pairs of Earth's animals on a massive ark to save them from a global flood. The film, which opened March 28, is sizing up to be a Biblical blockbuster, replete with star power and stunning special effects. But how realistic is it?

While many people consider the story of Noah's Ark merely an instructive myth or parable about God's punishment for man's wickedness, others believe that the story is historically accurate. To them, Noah's tale describes events that really happened only a few thousand years ago.

That’s a nice story, but it isn’t so.

Just because you or I believe or don't believe something is or isn't true, doesn't alter what is true.

The Biblical Story of the Great Flood is true as recorded. All you can do is say, "but it isn't so". Yet, you really don't know for sure one way or the other. I know it to be true.

> In my opinion, “Jewish atheist” Dr Irving Finkel created this “FAKE” tablet to make fun of the religion he despises.

Your opinion is wrong, the tablet is authentic.

The problem with Finkel’s approach is similar to the problem of those who attribute a single origin to every flood story (some of which are tsunami stories) and claim that they refer to and support the Old Testament flood — they don’t.

Finkel (and Ryan and Pitman, authors of “Noah’s Flood”, and many others) correctly view the written Sumerian flood story “The Epic of Gilgamesh” as being the oldest written flood story in existence. While there are a few superficial similarities — world flooded, bunch of people died — they each tell a flood story from a geographical (and/or temporal) point of view. There’s no compelling reason to claim that the Noah version, uniquely among all the dozens of flood stories worldwide, was derived from Gilgamesh’.

That Chinese-Turkish expedition was either “had” by some local scam artists (the scammers even spread straw around, but didn’t leave the tools used to remove manure, or better yet, the last manure piles left while the critters were disembarking) or is a deliberate hoax by them. There are perhaps dozens of topics that were spammed onto FR back at that time.

As far as the alleged radiocarbon dating is concerned, where was the dating performed? What was dated? Who collected the samples and what was the chain of custody? And what about the Young-Earther claim that radiocarbon dating doesn’t work that close to 4004 BC?

But that’s cheating. We need to believe (if we are going to Heaven) that the continents float on an ocean of water. That a comet whizzing by perturbed the balance and the continents sank and that water came out. And that a complete earthly biosphere can be stored on a gopher-wood boat and reestablished in a few years.

The fourth sun - Water Sun (Nahui Atl)

The Aztec creation story continues... This time the gods selected Tlaloc’s sister to be the sun. She was Calchiuhtlicue. But filled with jealousy, Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl struck down the sun. As she fell, the sky opened up and water flooded the earth. All things were destroyed again.

In the darkness between the suns, Quetzalcoatl descended into the underworld to bring up the bones of the dead. They would be used to bring to life the people who are now here.

http://www.bigorrin.org/archive33.htm

During the era of the fourth sun, the Sun of Water, the people grew very wicked and ignored the worship of the gods. The gods became angry and Tlaloc, the god of rains, announced that he was going to destroy the world with a flood. However, Tlaloc was fond of a devout couple, Tata and Nena, and he warned them of the flood. He instructed them to hollow out a great log and take two ears of corn-one for each of them-and eat nothing more.

So Tata and Nena entered the tree trunk with the two ears of corn, and it began to rain. When the rains subsided and Tata and Nena’s log landed on dry land, they were so happy that they caught a fish and ate it, contrary to the orders of Tlaloc. It was only after their stomachs were full that they remembered Tlaloc’s command.

Tlaloc then appeared to them and said, “This is how I am repaid for saving your lives?” They were then changed into dogs. It was at this point, where even the most righteous people were disobedient, that the gods destroyed the world, ushering in the present era of the Fifth Sun.

I'm similarly perplexed by people who accept the 'red letter' sayings of Jesus in the gospels, but do not consider the same writers & documents to be reliable in other respects.

When conversing with "red letter only" adherents, I point out that they should also take into consideration not only the Words of Christ but the actions. Some fail to see the Gospels in light of the cross and empty tomb. John Piper puts it this way:

Every verse of all four Gospels is meant by the authors to be read in the shadow of the cross. When we start reading one of the Gospels, we already know how it ends—the death and resurrection of Jesus as a substitute for our sins (Mark 10:45; Matthew 26:28)—and we should have that ending in mind with every verse that we read. And this is exactly what each of the Gospels intends.

The sermon can be found at Did Jesus Preach the Gospel of Evangelicalism?

You can view or read the sermon. Excellent piece when you get the time.

Noah certainly passed down the story to his descendents.

Some of his descendants lived through it and passed the story along as well. The interesting question about Noah that I have always wondered about is whether or not Noah and Adam ever talked to one another.

Jesus changed the elements present in water to make it become wine. He defied gravity by walking on water, supposedly anyways. All the miracles are equally as absurd, IMHO. I am a believer, but still, I know enough to know that it’s not readily confirmable.

Good point, Jesus himself mentions Noah so many times. Peter and Paul certainly believed it as well. I used to be a little casual about the whole matter until I came to realize the fact that miracles and the genuine power of God are what religion hinges on. Eventually, there’s no way around having to figure out how it’s true.

With modern power tools it took over 300 man-years of labor to build each of the Ark 'replicas'.
