SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mormons are free to down a Coke or Pepsi.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has clarified its position on caffeinated soft drinks, noting the news media often incorrectly states that its members don't drink caffeine.

Coffee?????
Wow. I had been told by friends who were LDS they weren’t supposed to drink caffeine. They were lying?
Well...when you have have candidate for President..you have to change the rules.
Well, the mormon gods do have a proclivity to change their minds quite frequently, so not surprising.
Likewise - a good friend of mine who is LDS very carefully avoids any drink with caffeine.
Maybe this clarification is a form of mormon taqqiya. :-)
I was talking to a Pastor just yesterday and we were discussing how in the Old Testament, a lot of Patriarchs had numerous wives and concubines and God had no problem with it. That being said; one is all I can handle. (Giggle, giggle)
I drink coffee, moderately. I think it’s good for you in moderation. But I do NOT drink Coke, which is a source of high fructose corn syrup, which is extremely bad for you.
Coke didn’t always contain that stuff, but it does now. Thanks mostly to gubbermint interference.
It's tough keeping up with revelations.
But otherwise you think these people are OK? That their leadership elite has people in it capable of running the country?
Why would someone be discriminated against for drinking caffeine? Avoiding it isn’t completely insensible.
The “word of wisdom” references “hot drinks”. That phrase is never further clarified. Interpretation is left to the reader.
God has defined marriage as one man and one woman.
Because He did not strike these OT people down with a ball of fire, is not the same as saying God did not have a problem with it.
In addition, historical reference is important. Many times when an enemy was defeated it was not uncommon for the victor to take the defeated enemy’s wives as his own, it was symbolic not necessarily carnal.
If God struck down everyone who sins, there would be no one left, it doesn’t mean He is ok with the sin.
They've certainly changed their tune over the years.
HFC is a darn sight better for you than wheat flour processed to make it sweeter ~ it’s frequently added to chocolate products, and to cake icing!
Nice try. You best go read the O.T. again. He even told Hosea to go marry a whore. Not justifying polygamy or whoredoms; just sayin’ .
Some time back, a Mormon friend couldn't go to his own daughter's wedding in a Mormon temple ... because he was known to drink coffee.
I used to work with a couple of mormons who eschewed all caffiene, even in chocolate. They were both brilliant, but they had the tendency to fall asleep during meetings, even 1:1s. Once one of them fell asleep while talking. Then he awoke several seconds later and picked up right where he left off.
After my father died, my mother married a Mormon.
He was a coffee drinker (as was she) but at their wedding reception they didn’t serve coffee because the local bishop might be in attendance.
Maybe your friend wasnt “Temple Worthy” (no Temple recommend?) either didn’t tithe at the appropriate rate; didn’t attempt Ward services; was married himself to a nonMormon, etc) rather than the “known coffee drinker” as the reason. My husband’s family is LDS and I know the types of issues I Iisted have been discussed by those who aren’t able to attend Temple weddings (including the bride or grooms parents).
The church's health guide has never specifically called out caffeine. Coffee, yes; caffeine, no.
Coffee contains caffeine, and some have independently extrapolated their interpretation to apply it to caffeine soft drinks (e.g., my parents many years ago), but it was never official church doctrine.
For members in good standing, this is one of those "it is your call" types of things.
Good thing, too... gotta have my diet Pepsis now and then!
