Is the Bible God's Word? (Do you believe the Bible is the only word of God?)

THE CATHOLIC BIBLE

Holding the "Douay" Roman Catholic Version of the Bible aloft in my hand, I ask, "Do YOU accept THIS Bible as the Word of God?" For reasons best known to themselves, the Catholic Truth Society have published their Version of the Bible in a very short, stumpy form. This Version is a very odd proportion of the numerous Versions in the market today. The Christian questioner is taken aback. "What Bible is that?" he asks. "Why, I thought you said that there was only ONE Bible!" I remind him. "Y-e-s," he murmurs hesitantly, "but what Version is that?" "Why, would that make any difference?" I enquire. Of course it does, and the professional preacher knows that it does. He is only bluffing with his "ONE Bible" claim.

The Roman Catholic Bible was published at Rheims in 1582, from Jerome's Latin Vulgate and reproduced at Douay in 1609. As such the RCV (Roman Catholic Version) is the oldest Version that one can still buy today. Despite its antiquity, the whole of the Protestant world, including the "cults"* condemn the RCV because it contains seven extra "books" which they contemptuously refer to as the "apocrypha" i.e. of DOUBTFUL AUTHORITY. Notwithstanding the dire warning contained in the Apocalypse, which is the last book in the RCV (renamed as "Revelation" by the Protestants), it is "revealed":

". . . If any man shall add to these things (or delete) God shall add unto him the plagues written in this Book." (Revelation 22:18-19)

But who cares! They do not really believe! The Protestants have bravely expunged seven whole books from their Book of God! The outcasts are:

The Book of Judith
The Book of Tobias
The Book of Baruch
The Buck of Esther, etc.
* This disparaging title is given by the orthodox to Jehovah's Witnesses, the Seventh Day Adventists and a thousand other sects and denominations with whom they do not see eye to eye.

"What about Holy Tradition == the word of God that was handed down orally? But not written down."

Paul succeeded at getting everything that Christ had declared to him written. That is why the Lord chose him, and revealed his gospel to him.

"The entire reason we have an NIV, NLT, KJV, NKJV, etc.. etc.. etc.. is because as our own language has matured, each of these different "translations" seeks to find the word that's the closest to the original Greek, which is what the New Testament was written in."

Actually, the reason is so that the various publishers can claim a copyright, and make a tisy profit. The uncopyrighted KJV is tough to make a profit on, when you can get it hardbound for four bucks, while the copyright Bibles go for as much as $120.

If I were the leader, I would have followers. I am but a humble Lord Protector and Grand Advocate.

I am forever listless and without asterisks.

Even though some might think I am the keeper of the Official OHEOQITI Ping List, alas there is no list. Only pings.

Neener Neener Neener.

Regarding the apocraphal books - the 1611 version of the King James Bible, which I believe was the 1st printing, contains all of the apocraphal books that are in the Douay-Rheims Bible. All protestants who think that if it’s not KJ, it isn’t legit, please take note.

“I’m a King James Bible Only Christian.”

See my post #328 on this thread - the 1611 edition (printing) of the King James Bible (the very 1st) - is it acceptable to you (other than the old English of the day used in it)?

“In other words these so called scholars don’t have any right to change anything in the Bible.”

Is it wrong for scholars to translate the Bible? Some translations are more accurate than others. I for one am quite fond of the Jerusalem Bible (not the New Jerusalem Bible). Mine has the Imprimatur, and I prefer it over most other translations.

Are there perfectly accurate translations? I would say no. Can we go back to the original texts in either Hebrew or Greek? No, we cannot do that. Translations have a human touch that may change God’s original inspired word.

By using several, and letting the Holy Spirit guide, I believe I can get to the intent of God’s original Word.

I also believe, and know, that God continues to speak to us today. I do not believe that He contradicts Himself when he does speak today.

Pray should always be “conversation” with God. He tells us to “be still and know...” If we don’t shut up once in a while, how can we hear Him speak to us?

The book of Esther was nearly omitted from the Bible - it does not mention God’s name in it. Yet God speaks to us clearly in that book. So with Judith, Sirach, Wisdom, etc. Everyone should read all of the books of the Bible, and for those who haven’t, especially the so-called aprocraphal books.

Why do I want to “see mormonism”? See it where? YOU can’t define “cult”?

Here is what you said: I have never read nor found in the Bible (NIV, KJV for example) that there are different "levels" of Heaven, nor many "mansions."

Then I pointed out that the Bible says, in one of the two version you mentioned:

"I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows."
--2 Corinthians 12:2 (New International Version)

And then you say: You’re quoting Paul, not Jesus.

You're shifting the terms of the argument when your deficiency is pointed out.

Back again to your original objection regarding "mansions," here is what Jesus says in the KJV:

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
--John 14:2

Will you now say, "You're quoting John allegedly quoting Jesus, not Jesus"?

LC: You excerpted the following from the Book of Mormon (in you usual pretty colors as usual) the following: “For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things. “

Now take a deep breath and instead of focusing on the pretty colors read the following words from the Book of Mormon. “For if I will, saith the Lord of Host ..I will command my people; OTHERWISE...”

It is somewhat complicated but read that section slowly. Remove the colors if you need to. It might make is more understandable for you.

This means that plural marriage is ONLY acceptable when the LORD commands. Not any other time. It doesn’t mean that plural marriage is never acceptable. The LORD also said, “Thou shalt not kill.” The LORD subsequently commanded the children of Israel to kill women and children in war situations. I can’t explain that as I can’t explain plural marriage.

But I have faith that God is perfect and his judgements are just.
