"The entire reason we have an NIV, NLT, KJV, NKJV, etc.. etc.. etc.. is because as our own language has matured, each of these different "translations" seeks to find the word that's the closest to the original Greek, which is what the New Testament was written in."

Actually, the reason is so that the various publishers can claim a copyright, and make a tisy profit. The uncopyrighted KJV is tough to make a profit on, when you can get it hardbound for four bucks, while the copyright Bibles go for as much as $120.

It is so that various cult groups cannot grab off the new translated bibles and claim them for their own as they have done the KJV. Even the Hari Kirshnas will print a passage from KJV when it suits their needs.

As for the “tidy profit” on the others...you can get a free NKJV or an NIV from the Gidons.
