Early Church Fathers - Worship on Sabbath or Sunday
Stay Catholic ^

Posted on 03/24/2007 3:10:20 PM PDT by NYer

Contrary to the teaching of Seventh Day Adventists the early Church gathered for worship on the Lord’s Day (Sunday), not Saturday, in honor of the day our Lord rose from the dead.

The Didache

But every Lord's day . . . gather yourselves together and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned (Didache 14 [A.D. 70]).

Ignatius of Antioch

[T]hose who were brought up in the ancient order of things [i.e., Jews] have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord's day, on which also our life has sprung up again by him and by his death (Letter to the Magnesians 8 [A.D. 110]).

The Didascalia

The apostles further appointed; On the first day of the week let there be service, and the reading of the holy scriptures, and the oblation [sacrifice of the Mass], because on the first day of the week [Sunday] our Lord rose from the place of the dead, and on the first day of the week he arose upon the world, and on the first day of the week he ascended up to heaven, and on the first day of the week he will appear at last with the angels of heaven (Didascalia 2 [A.D. 225]).

Victorinus

The sixth day [Friday] is called parasceve, that is to say, the preparation of the kingdom. . . . On this day also, on account of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ, we make either a station to God or a fast. On the seventh day he rested from all his works, and blessed it, and sanctified it. On the former day we are accustomed to fast rigorously, that on the Lord's Day we may go forth to our bread with giving of thanks. Let the parasceve become a rigorous fast, lest we should appear to observe any Sabbath with the Jews . . . which Sabbath he [Christ] in his body abolished (The Creation of the World [A.D. 300]).

Eusebius

They [the early saints of the Old Testament] did not care about circumcision of the body, neither do we [Christians]. They did not care about observing Sabbaths, nor do we. They did not avoid certain kinds of food, neither did they regard the other distinctions which Moses first delivered to their posterity to be observed as symbols; nor do Christians of the present day do such things (Church History 1:4:8 [A.D. 325]).

[T]he day of his [Christ's] light . . . was the day of his resurrection from the dead, which they say, as being the one and only truly holy day and the Lord's day, is better than any number of days as we ordinarily understand them, and better than the days set apart by the Mosaic Law for feasts, new moons, and Sabbaths, which the Apostle [Paul] teaches are the shadow of days and not days in reality (Proof of the Gospel 4:16:186 [A.D. 319]).

Athanasius

The Sabbath was the end of the first creation, the Lord's day was the beginning of the second, in which he renewed and restored the old in the same way as he prescribed that they should formerly observe the Sabbath as a memorial of the end of the first things, so we honor the Lord's day as being the memorial of the new creation (On Sabbath and Circumcision 3 [A.D. 345]).

Cyril of Jerusalem

Fall not away either into the sect of the Samaritans or into Judaism, for Jesus Christ has ransomed you. Stand aloof from all observance of Sabbaths and from calling indifferent meats common or unclean (Catechetical Lectures 4:37 [A.D. 350]).

Council of Laodicea

Christians should not Judaize and should not be idle on the Sabbath, but should work on that day; they should, however, particularly reverence the Lord's Day and, if possible, not work on it, because they were Christians (canon 29 [A.D. 360]).

John Chrysostom

When he said, "You shall not kill" . . . he did not add "because murder is a wicked thing." The reason was that conscience had taught this beforehand, and he speaks thus, as to those who know and understand the point. Wherefore when he speaks to us of another commandment, not known to us by the dictate of conscience, he not only prohibits, but adds the reason. When, for instance, he gave commandment concerning the Sabbath — "On the seventh day you shall do no work"— he subjoined also the reason for this cessation. What was this? "Because on the seventh day God rested from all his works which he had begun to make" [Ex. 20:10]. And again: "Because you were a servant in the land of Egypt" [Deut. 21:18]. For what purpose then, I ask, did he add a reason respecting the Sabbath, but did no such thing in regard to murder? Because this commandment was not one of the leading ones. It was not one of those which were accurately defined of our conscience, but a kind of partial and temporary one, and for this reason it was abolished afterward. But those which are necessary and uphold our life are the following: '"You shall not kill... You shall not commit adultery... You shall not steal." On this account he adds no reason in this case, nor enters into any instruction on the matter, but is content with the bare prohibition (Homilies on the Statues 12:9 [A.D. 387]).

You have put on Christ, you have become a member of the Lord and been enrolled in the heavenly city, and you still grovel in the Law [of Moses]? How is it possible for you to obtain the kingdom? Listen to Paul's words, that the observance of the Law overthrows the gospel, and learn, if you will, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfall. Why do you keep the Sabbath and fast with the Jews? (Homilies on Galatians 2:17 [A.D. 395]).

Apostolic Constitutions

And on the day of our Lord's resurrection, which is the Lord's Day, meet more diligently, sending praise to God that made the universe by Jesus, and sent him to us, and condescended to let him suffer, and raised him from the dead. Otherwise what apology will he make to God who does not assemble on that day . . . in which is performed the reading of the prophets, the preaching of the gospel, the oblation of the sacrifice, the gift of the holy food (Apostolic Constitutions 2:7:60 [A.D. 400]).

If Christ was crucified on Friday how do you get three days in the tomb and come out on Sunday?

Was He not crucified on Wednesday?

Because Friday was counted ... Friday, Saturday ... Sunday is the 3rd day.

Right. Doesn't mention how we are to keep the day holy, does it? Doesn't say much about going to church.

Matt. 28:1; Mark 16:2,9; John 20:1,19- the Gospel writers purposely reveal Jesus' resurrection and appearances were on Sunday. This is because Sunday had now become the most important day in the life of the Church.

1 Cor. 16:2 - Paul instructs the Corinthians to make contributions to the churches "on the first day of the week," which is Sunday. This is because the primary day of Christian worship is Sunday.

Rev 1:10 - John specifically points out that he witnesses the heavenly Eucharistic liturgy on Sunday, the Lord's day, the new day of rest in Christ.

Matt. 16:19; 18:18 - whatever the Church binds on earth is bound in heaven. Since the resurrection, Mass has been principally celebrated on Sunday.

it says three days and three nights

Matt 12:40 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (KJV)

This Christ speaking so I take it that it is a literal three days and a literal three nights.

Was He not crucified on Wednesday?

30 A.D.

[Exodus 12:6] And it hath become a charge to you, until the fourteenth day of this month, and the whole assembly of the company of Israel have slaughtered it between the evenings. ("The Passover Lamb"). The Hebrews had two evenings each day. The first was at high noon and the second was at sunset. Between the evenings would be at approximately 3:00 P.M. in that latitude at that time of year for Passover.

The body was placed in the tomb shortly before sunset of the 14th [Luke 23:52-54] This man(Joseph of Aramathea) went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation (the 14th), and the sabbath drew on...(was about to begin).

The Sabbath about to begin was not the weekly Saturday Sabbath...it was the First Sabbath of the Days of Unleavened Bread (Thursday) [John 19:31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

The High day Sabbath is also the Sabbath spoken of in Mark 16:1 and because of this erroneous placement of non divine chapter and verse, it has caused much confusion over the years. Most folks think Mark is speaking here of Saturday when you can see that the thought process is a continuation of [Mark 15:42-47]. Chapter and verse are not divinely inspired......much to the consternation of some folks.

The body was then in the tomb Wednesday night/Thursday (one day);Thursday night/Friday (two days); Friday night/Saturday (three days)[Matthew 12:40] and as [Matthew 28:1] says: And on the eve of the sabbaths, at the dawn, toward the first of the sabbaths, came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. verse 6...the Angel says "He is not here. He has risen!"

The eve of the Sabbaths are speaking of just before sunset on the weekly Sabbath and the First Sabbath of the seven Sabbath count of the "Omer" to Pentecost....thus the plural. [Leviticus 23:15]

Yes.....he was crucified on a Wednesday and resurrected on a Saturday! These simple Biblical truths are constantly attacked as this destroys much of the false tradition and theology of the mainstream church. They cannot counter with opposing scripture as there is none. They can only point to their false tradition and their false councils for "their proof".

**Just an FYI, the SDA does not deny that people met on Sunday, or that at some point people decided to swap Sunday for the Sabbath. They teach that it was an error, but to deny it happened would be silly.**

So, then, why do you berate us for celebrating Mass on Sunday or having Sunday services. I have been the focus of some of your posts on another thread.

In the church of the Body of Christ there is no Jew nor Gentile. Paul established that the Gentile believers need not convert of Judaism, nor do the have to follow the customs of the Jews.

Agreed. But scripture plainly says that the new covenant is with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It says it twice, in the old testament and is repeated in the new testament:

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, He says, "BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH;
Heb 8:9 NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT; FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, AND I DID NOT CARE FOR THEM, SAYS THE LORD.
Heb 8:10 "FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS. AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

Old Testament:

Jer 31:31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
Jer 31:32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.
Jer 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

So once again, the Lord, in the bible, says that the New Covenant is only going to be made with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

So is scripture wrong? Is the new covenant NOT made with the house of Israel and the house of Judah?

So that is right, I said that the 10 commandments are not part of Christian doctrine. They were given to Moses and the children of Isreal, not to the Church of the Body.
Obeying the law for righteousness obligates one to follow the whole law.

The ten commandments are an essential part of Christian doctrine. The written commandments are the benchmark, the gauge, the judge, the schoolmaster. They are what tells us whether or not we are sinning. They are the objective measure of our sin. That's what Paul was explaining here:

Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Paul explains further:

Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Rom 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

"Love", Godly love, is defined by the ten commandments. If one finds oneself violating the ten commandments in action, thought, or spirit, then that person is sinning, not exhibiting or practicing Godly love.

So, then, why do you berate us for celebrating Mass on Sunday or having Sunday services. I have been the focus of some of your posts on another thread.

Why practice error? For those who know to do good and do it not, is it not sin? Does there remain a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins once one knows the truth? Is not the transgression of the Law sin?

My beef with the FR Catholics is that on one hand, y'all say "we aren't bound by scripture, we created them", and the next, you want to read Sunday into the scriptures. It seems incredibly inconsistent to me to have the majority of Catholics believe that Sunday is scriptural when the preponderance of Catholic theologians who actually tell it like it is. Sunday is a pure Catholic invention. If you ask around, you might find out that my beef is with inconsistency and error, not individual people. I do tend to word stuff strongly and sarcastically, but that's just me.

I will ask you the same question that I ask Campion and have yet to get a straight yes or no answer:

Is the swap from Sabbath to Sunday scriptural or is it an invention of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and thus witness to its binding and loosing power? Yes, or no? Only one can be true.

**Why practice error? **

I don't believe we are practicing error. Are you absolutely sure (not sola scriptura) that you are correct? What documents do you have to back up your theory that all Christians/Catholics who celebrate the Lord's Resurrection of Sunday are in error.

Please don't give us something off a SDA homepage, for I believe that would be in error.

Do you say a creed?

Does it include the words "one, holy, catholic and apostolic"? Just curious. The catholic here is with a small 'c'

The scriptures are the only way to be sure of any point of doctrine. I am absolutely sure that Sunday is an error because I searched the scriptures for its justification myself. That is all a believer can do. When I did not find it, I decided to find out where it came from, and I used Catholic sources to prove it.

All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (II Timothy 3:16)

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, cultivate your own salvation with fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12)

"You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify." Cardinal Gibbons (for many years head of the Catholic Church in America), The Faith of Our Fathers (92d ed., rev.; Baltimore: John Murphy Company), p.89.

No Church has the authority to change God's Law. By their fruits, ye shall know them.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

You and I have discussed this before. And I acknowledge reading your reference posted in blue. (I only wonder what the rest of his quote might have been!!!LOL!)

The apostles changed this. We both know they were of Jewish origin. So they attended the Sabbath rituals on Saturday.

Then to celebrate the Last Supper as Christ had instructed them: "Do this in remembrance of me." they would gather on Sunday -- the day of the Lord's Resurrection!

So the original church that Jesus sent out -- the apostles were the ones who changed this. It may not be in scripture quite that way. But please do consider the scriptural references at the beginning of this thread.

Then look it up. If you still contend that Sunday is scriptural, take it up with the Cardinal.

Jesus told the disciples to celebrate the Passover in remembrance of Him, which is what my brothers and sisters and I will be doing in a couple of weeks.

So the original church that Jesus sent out -- the apostles were the ones who changed this. It may not be in scripture quite that way. But please do consider the scriptural references at the beginning of this thread.

Try divorcing yourself of your preconceived notions and simply read all those scriptures and their context in a quiet place out of a printed Bible and tell me they mean what is cited above.
