Number of Adults Who Don't Attend Church Service Doubles
Christian Post ^ | May 5, 2004

Barna Research Group released their most recent study showing that the number of adults that is unchurched, which refers to not having attended a church service, other than for special occasions such as a holiday service, has increased 92% from 39 million to 75 million since 1991. The survey was conducted between late January and early February of 2004, through telephone with a random sample of 1041 adults.

According to one part of its study that observed 18 factors that distinguish how different the unchurched adults are from the national average church goers, it was found that unchurhced aults are:

- Lless likely to read the Bible (19% compared to 44%) and to pray (63% to 83%)
- Less likely to accept Jesus Christ as their savior (17% to 50%)
- In terms of theological beliefs, the unchurched adults are less likely to believe the Bible is accurate, that Jesus was sinless, that Satan exists, that salvation is comes through the grace of God, and that God is the creator and ruler of the universe.

The study also found that men were more unchurched than women, constituting 55% of the unchurched. It was also found that those who are younger than the median age of U.S. adults, which is 43, and those whose martial status is single are more likely to be unchurched.

In terms of regions, most of the unchurched adults turned out to reside in the coastal areas: 51% of the unchurched live in the Northeast or West, constituting 23% of the total number of residents in California and New York.

Looking at the result, the researcher George Barna said what is needed to transform the unchurched to churched is by connecting them closer to God. He said the reason why they don’t attend church is not because they are just lazy or not informed.

“They are wholly disinterested in church life – often passionately so,” he said, “Church events cannot effectively compete with what the world has to offer. The only thing the Church can provide that no one else has is a life-changing, practical encounter – and on-going relationship – with the living God and with people transformed by similar encounters. Until such a connection is made, focusing on features, programs and benefits other than such a life-shaping encounter is more likely to lose ground than to gain it.”

He also addressed the issue of attracting the unchurched youth and that such trend could challenge existing churches to strengthen their core spiritual beliefs to effectively introduce unchruched individuals to biblical principles and practices.

He said, “Millions of young adults are more interested in truth, authenticity, experiences, relationships and spirituality than they are in laws, traditions, events, disciplines, institutions and religion. The confluence of preconceived notions, past experiences and evolving lifestyles and values means that existing churches simply cannot reach millions of today’s unchurched people. The rapidly swelling numbers of unchurched people may be forcing existing churches to reinvent their core spiritual practices while holding tightly to their core spiritual beliefs. It will take radically new settings and experiences to effectively introduce unchurched individuals to biblical principles and practices.”

Barna further observed three unique characteristics that distinguish the unchurched from others. First is their low interest in the mainstream activities of the society such as engaging in community service activities, participating in church life, and donating money to non-profit organizations. He said, “The unchurched are more likely than others to be somewhat isolated from the mainstream activities of the society in which they live.”

The second characteristic is what Barna calls non-committal nature. He said,. “You can see this emotional and intellectual distancing of themselves through their more moderate ideology, their more ambiguous theological perspectives, a lower likelihood of embracing terms used to describe oneself (such as “generous,” “friendly” and “deeply spiritual”), a substantially lower level of self-professed commitment to their faith of choice, and their rejection of the idea of responsibility for nurturing other people’s faith.”

Lastly, Barna noted that the unchurched are very independent as the data indicated they are less likely to marry, less likely to have children (even when married) and less loyal to organizations and products.

In other words, they want a spiritual experience without the hastle...they want God without cumbersome commandments...they want to ascend to a higher calling but hold on to their fallen proclivities....In short, they want a JESUS without a CROSS!

They want truth, but not tradition and rules?

Which is exactly why we are in this situation now.

“Church events cannot effectively compete with what the world has to offer. . . . "

And yet they keep trying, especially in the realm of morals: We used to teach that X was wrong, but now we know God loves everyone, including [or, more often, especially] those who do X. No wonder the populace is saying, Well, if God loves us for doing whatever we want, what we really want to do with our Sundays is go to brunch, shop, and watch TV.

""very independent" spells selfishness. This paragraph speaks to me as today's people have the "I" problem. Selfishness is typical today and I am sure 75% of the divorces are due to it.

American Legion Posts, VFWs, K of Cs, ELKs and most of the fraternal organizations are not getting young people to join. There are more people at the local health spa (their own bodies) than helping the fraternal orders' and Church's' feed the poor.

Times of reckoning are just down the road

Every Friday I see streams of motorhomes and trailers headed east to the sand dunes, or further east to the river, loaded to the gills with quads, dirtbikes, jet skis, you name it. They all come back Sunday night, another day of the Lord passing without notice.

Maybe if some pastors or evangelists headed out to Glamis and set up 6 am services in the sand, the trend might be reversed.

Who says that "Church" has to be in a fancy building downtown? Why can't it be under a canopy in the sand? And if the people are in the desert or the mountains, then why not send the gospel there? Why not send the Gospel to where the unchurched hang out on weekends?

Go into all the world...

Isn't Glamis in the world?

Why aren't we there?

Meanwhile, the figure for New Zealand is 60%, and in Australia it is 54%. (And people who explicitly state they have "no religion" is 26% for NZ and 35% for Australia)

These types of ministries are slowly but surely rising up. There are ministries that follow the NASCAR circuit, there are ministries that go to MLB and NFL games. Many of these leagues will have games followed by Chritian concert and evangelical events. Like I said, it is happening slowly, but is happening none the less.

does anywhere else in the country have this ritual, or is it confined to So Cal?

Well, from about now until September, here in my neck of the woods this happens, at least from the suburbs. People go to the lakes. But, we have a higher percentage of church-going people than other places, even on marathon days whether the St. Louis Track Club believes it or not. (the marathon route goes right past at least 10 churches and they always do it on Sunday morning)

It was that way on Long Island when I lived there.

The L I Expressway to the east was backed up from the N Y City line Friday night and coming back Sunday night.

I say it's nonsense. The lion's share of the drop-off had been achieved by 1991. If it halved again since then, the churches would be nothing but vast caverns echoing silence.

So these people go after the world and find leanness in their souls. Nothing new here that hasn't been understood for thousands of years. The article points out the shallow, selfish life that emerges from a lack of relationship to God. Fortunately, the answer is the same one it has always been, faith in God.
