*URGENT* Additional, easy, cut-and-paste campaign to save talk radio (30 seconds of your time)

Posted on 09/12/2003 11:21:13 AM PDT by jmstein7

HELP SAVE TALK RADIO! TAKE ACTION NOW!

It will help to write letters to the editors of various national and regional publications. Below is an extensive list of media contacts that can be pasted and used in an email. Here is a sample letter (edited from the site), but you are encouraged to write your own:

___________________________________________________________

I understand that the Senate will soon vote on whether to reverse the decision of President Bush's Federal Communications Commission to update obsolete, anti-free market rules regarding media ownership. Any efforts to re-regulate mass media must be opposed, as they would stifle our decision to listen or watch news sources that share our individual beliefs.

The old media ownership rules were written when only three commercial television networks existed. However, the explosion of talk radio (from 75 stations in 1980 to over 1300 today!) and the prevalence of cable television channels and Internet sites have rendered these restrictions obsolete. There are now limitless sources of diverse information available to all consumers no matter what their political leanings. Easing restrictions will only further benefit the situation by making it possible for additional sources of news to remain viable especially in smaller markets.

Businesses who chose to broadcast should only be limited by consumer demand and satisfaction. It should be free markets and consumers - and not government bureaucrats - that determine what voices are heard.

I urge Congress to support President Bush's FCC and vote against any efforts to reverse its ruling on media ownership!

What we need is an easy to copy-paste email list of Senators and Representatives.

Want to tell lots of people about this? Go here:

Ignorance Making You Ill? Cure It!

for links, tools, & instructions about how to contact a pile of different people, and how to send a link to this story right here ( or anywhere else ) to a "mass email" using Outlook Express.

Follow the links; somewhere among all that stuff are the emails for assorted Reps.

So, you are on the same side of this argument as Disney, Viacom, AOLTIMEWARNERTURNER, and the other liberal media giants?

I'm no fan of the FCC, but just how is talk radio in any danger? It seems to be have done very well for itself over the past 10 years and I don't see anything gunning for it but incompetent liberals who can't cut it in the existing industry.

It's not. This whole thing is a giant misunderstanding based - as far as I can tell - on a single RAT in Congress doing an Alec Baldwin-style bloviation, claiming that "repealing the FCC ownership limit changes is just the first step, and next we're going to make the Fairness Doctrine into federal law!"

Regardless of what your opinion is on the FCC rollback of the station ownership limits (which wasn't even that much of a rollback), it has nothing to do with the long-dead Fairness Doctrine. In addition, the Supreme Court made is crystal clear 20 years ago that the Fairness Doctrine was only constitutional as long as the dissemination of news and opinion was largely controlled by federally-licensed radio and TV stations, and that the moment technology took away that monopoly, the FC would be ruled unconstitutional. That's why the FCC repealed the FC just a year or so later, based only on the fact that cable TV was starting to gain ground. Since then, the number of cable channels has EXPLODED, the number of broadcast radio and TV stations has EXPLODED, we have two more news channels, the Internet, the web ... we now live in a world where anyone with an opinion can put it out there for the entire rest of the world to see.

So even if the single RAT wasn't a blowhard loser, and the FC was passed (and Bush signed it, an even more laughable concept), an injunction would be issued against it the same day, and a few months later the SCOTUS would nuke it.

There is NO threat to talk radio.

----- Didn't we settle this already?

I would like to see cartels and monopolies broken up so that the small businessman would have a chance to compete with the multinationals who rig the market.

Apparently we have our share of anti-capitalists on FR who also want to establish more caps, limits, and government regulations on free markets.....in addition to free speech.

Regarding the original form letter, here is a modified version if you want to personalize your own letter to send. I revised the third paragraph by adding two sentences. And I referenced KVI 570, however that can be edited to reflect your personal favorite station if different:

Businesses that chose to broadcast should only be limited by consumer demand and satisfaction. It should be free markets and consumers - and not government bureaucrats - that determine what voices are heard. I’m a loyal listener of KVI 570 AM (talk) radio in Seattle, WA. And I would be greatly troubled by any FCC re-regulation that would impose limitations upon the type and variety of programming that KVI radio currently offers.

"The only representation one can get around here in to infiltrate the Democrating party and vote against the leaders in the primaries."

That's pretty scary. I do believe if I had Chuckie and the Hildebeest as senators, I'd have to move somewhere else. The problem is that there fewer and fewer "somewhere elses" to move to.
