Arnold Schwarzenegger on the issues

The Associated Press - 8/27/03

Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his most detailed comments to date on a range of social and policy issues Wednesday when he appeared on the Sean Hannity and Larry Elder syndicated talk-radio programs. Here are some of the positions he staked out:

ABORTION

_Told Hannity he is "pro-choice" but opposes the late-stage procedures described as "partial-birth" abortions. Asked whether he is in favor of parental notification when minors seek abortions, he replied, "I am. But in some cases when there is abuse in the family or problems in the family, then the courts should decide."

GAY MARRIAGE

_Said he did not support gay marriage but "I do support domestic partnerships." He said marriage should be between a man and a woman.

GUNS

_Said he supports a ban on assault weapons, trigger locks under some circumstances and the Brady Bill, which requires background checks on gun purchasers. "I feel that it's important to have, and also I would like to close the loophole of the gun shows," he said, referring to a legal provision that allows unchecked sales at gun shows. But he added, "I think that people should have the right to bear arms."

PRAYER IN SCHOOLS

_"I believe in prayer in school and I think it should be up to the schools, you know, what religion they belong and what direction they want to go," he said.

OFFSHORE DRILLING

_Said companies should not be permitted to drill for oil off California's coast. "I think that we should stop the oil drilling and I think that our state government and federal government should negotiate to buy back the leases," he said.

SCHOOL VOUCHERS

_Indicated support for some form of vouchers. "With No Child Left Behind Act that President Bush has put forward you have a chance that if your school has failed that you can go and take your child to another school," he said. "I believe in that. I think it gives us choices, gives the parents choices, which is extremely important."

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

_Said he had not yet taken a position on affirmative action or on Proposition 54, the initiative that will appear on the recall ballot and would ban the state from collecting most racial data.

DRUG LEGALIZATION

_Said drug legalization was "a bad idea" but he supported legalized medicinal marijuana.

IMMIGRATION

_Indicated support for allowing undocumented immigrants already in the country to remain here, but a spokesman said later he was not specifically proposing an amnesty program.

_Said he opposed legislation to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, but that services for illegal immigrants was a complicated issue that was mostly up to the federal government.

_Said Proposition 187, the 1994 measure that denied many services to illegal immigrants, was "history" because it has been largely voided by the courts. He supported the proposition at the time voters approved it. "Now we have to move forward with the whole thing and to look at it, what we're going to do with all the people that are undocumented immigrants here in this state. What should we do? Should we have them to stay here, which I think is the right way to do, but how do you then include them in our society, how do you make it official, how do you make it legal?" he said. He added he would try to team up with other states with large immigrant populations and lobby the federal government to address the issue.

TAXES

_Refused to take a pledge not to raise taxes, but pledged to raise them only if there was a state emergency.

>> That should put him all the way to 3.25%.

Actually, McClintock is polling double-digits just like your hero Arinold, but don't let those darn facts get in the way. It must really suck to REMINDED libertarians can't stand this guy every time you try to paint socialist Arinold as a "Libertarian". What a stupid ploy to try to win him votes. What's next, is Clinton a card-carrying member of the Christian Coalition?

Oh boy, now NARAL poster boy Droopy Dog Lieberman is your idea of a "conservative". Interesting that you say he secretly votes for G.W. Bush, since all his supporters say they hope Dick Cheney dies of a heart attack because the "real" President Joe Lieberman was robbed of his rightful place. Joe Lieberman himself gloats over these delusions in every campaign speech ("Al and I ALREADY beat George Bush!") You must be the same Arinold supporter who was calling the KENNEDY KLAN "conservative", of all people (Ted Kennedy a closet Republican!) Howie Dean is "conservative" by your standards. Heck, his supporters back home in VT SAY he's a "fiscal conservative", right? That fits your limus test quite nicely. Better go vote for a right-wing DINO like Dean. Heck, he's already to the RIGHT of your boy Arinold on guns.

The REAL tragedy about Arinold is that his positions fit ANY far-left Clintonesque Democrat who runs as a "moderate" even though his agenda is for pure socialism. Let's try another, shall we?

"This guy is a Libertarian
The only reason he running as a Republican is he knows he wouldn't have a chance
running as a Libertarian"

Yep - He's been a Republican for 20 years just waiting for the chance to run...

... and Tom is a Reform Party sympathiser who has been a Republican for years....

"If this place is going to go to hell, then let's get it over with. That's why I would support Bustamante if McClintock were to exit the race. "

With McClintock IN the race you are still supporting Bustamente - you got your wish !

"How can you say that this early in the campaign? Have you read the guy's speeches? Do you know his positions on the issues well? He's quite a statesman in my view. "

... and if he manages to sneak in he will be REAL effective with Cruz as his Lt. Gov. and a totally ticked off Dem Majority in the legislature... Sure, he's going to be able to get all those things he wants done....right....

The wagering windows are open as to how long it would be before a recall against him is passed .....

"Don't worry, they'll be the first ones to blame it all on Schwarzenegger.

You know, just like when George H.W. Bush cost Ross Perot the election."

I am amazed at the greed of the McClintock camp. They cannot win. Everyone knows that. But they are going to make sure that Bustemante does. There is nothing "principled" about thier position. It is just childish greed, imo.

One could equivalently blame Arnie for preventing McClintock from having a chance to win.

As always, (R)nold supporters arguing with facts and logic. How is liberal (R) running fraudulently as a republican not greed? How is liberal (r) demanding that McClintock get out of the race, even though (R) has not even bothered to take stances on most issues, not greed? How is no-experience, no position (R), dividing the republican vote, not greed?

Nope - Arnolds being in the race and taking votes from Cruz is the ONLY chance that Tom has of sneaking by both.

Tom alone vs. Davis / Cruz is a sure loser - Tom can not get any crossovers and knows it.

Huh? Did you pay any attention to the election last year? Bill Simon, portrayed as a right-wing extremist and correctly portrayed as a moron, ran the worst political campaign in modern history -- and he *still* came within a few percent of Davis. Why would McClintock, running a better campaign, in a special recall election with highly-motivated GOP voters, not have a chance?

Democrats who did not like Davis stayed home - This time they WILL come out and vote for Cruz.

I don't recall - did the moron beat Tom in the primary ?

I hadn't considered that; if so, Schwarzenegger may have the same problem. If we don't elect a Republican with a good majority, we could be seeing some backlash right away. The new governor will have to be a politician as well as an ideologue (or a celebrity). I think Schwarzenegger would be able to get on TV and talk to Californians about legislation and policy. This is something Gray never seemed to do, at least not with any real message. McClintock might be able to do that, too -- we just don't know.

He will, but I don't think it will be to the same extent.

That after-school prop he got passed ( whether you like it or not ) gained him some points and respect from that side of the fence, showing him as open-minded, effective and a leader.

You could, I guess, if it were true. But it is not true. McClintock cannot win. Arnold can. And it looks to me like McClintock's greed is getting in the way of his doing the right thing.

How old are you brownie? 10? That's how you come across. You might want to consider whether your "manner" helps or hurts the greedy McClintock? :-)

Like CFR gained some points and respect from that side of the fence for Bush, showing him as open-minded, effective and a leader. Just as sharing power with the Dem gained the Republican senate points and respect?

No matter the Republican - Democrats will fight. The only possible way Arnold avoid some of the heat is if he is a RINO and does as they please.
