Hannity station went dead for about 20 seconds. Said he had never seen anything like it.

Good thing there is a escape hatch in the roof of every elevator car ~ null and void
Is that really true? I thought that was a myth now ~ libravoter
To the best of my knowledge. I always look at the ceiling in an elevator, and so far in every case where it wasn't hidden by plastic lighting diffuser pannels, I've seen a hatch. (Yes I already know I'm weird)
(kind of like you can always escape a building through the roof.) ~ libravoter
These days most of the roof access door are locked to stop snipers and jumpers...

I have plenty of them, thanks. I bought them when I got hit by lightening a few years ago.
But we fine here in TN. I've got the A/C cranked up in sympathy! lol

I think South Jersey's next.....my Clapper just stopped working.

"Klaatu Barata Nikto" was my first thought, too.
I think "Gort, barenga" was the command for the robot to stop blasting people with his heat ray. Just in case you're ever chased by a robot with a heat ray. I don't know how you tell him to turn the power back on - that wasn't in the movie.

Is this blackout affecting some websites? I've been trying to access mail2web.com for the past hour and can't do it.I'm sure a lot of websites are down. Unless you're with some gigantic web hosting company with lots of backup, you're probably at the whims of their own local power source.

Two dozen people are trapped in the building where I work in NYC. I missed it by 10 minutes.
I'm at home. Things are calm. No police foot in the areas I walked up from Lower Manhattan across West 14th. Transition time. Calm.
Runs on water, supplies. Orderly. Volunteers directing foot and car/bus traffic. Walked up the middle of Broadway with an orderly process on either side.
So far, it's as calm as 9|11, without the stunned atmosphere.
Many emergency lights in buildings should begin to go out soon. Will be iffy for those trapped in elevators.
Best to all. I have a radio and am using my laptop with a battery.

Boy you're not kidding....what a mess that will be. I just hope there are enough TVs and DVDs to go around so no "violence" breaks out.

Bush to speak? I don't remember any presidential addresses over previous power outages. No, he was already scheduled to speak before this even happened. Besides, I don't know it would do any good to talk about it when the folks it's affecting don't have electricity to watch the speech.

NIAGRA FALLS!!!I heard this too, on FOX. Anyone remember the Lewiston 6 (Buffalo)? The Lewiston terrorist group and trainees and their funds, funneled through Niagara/Niagra and Ontario? Is Bloomberg still so certain?? Bringing back power slowly and area by area, as Bloomberg is saying live now, is not explaining how or why or disminishing fears at all. It's like we are just sheeple, waiting to be placated, 'here, your power is back on, honey, just go watch tv...'
BTW, here in nw PA, power is on (obviously) for now, but areas not so far from me, Erie, Meadville, Oil City are out or having probs.

Everything's fine here in San Diego, too. In fact, this is where Prez Bush will be speaking from -- he's here visiting the troops and having a fundraiser.

Never a dull moment here in NYC... I just hope that the power is restored before nightfall... Imagine the looting that could occur in the outer boroughs...

I know this is a secondary concern, but how long will it take for frozen food to thaw/spoil in all of the restaurants and grocery stores? Will they be legally required to throw it all away? About day two of power outage due to hurricanes, I would crank up the only gas grill on the block and invite everyone over for an all day "Whatever is Defrosting Party". You are going to loose it, might as well grill it!
