Here me now and believe me later, my friends: all these conservative orgasms over Arnold Schwarzenegger are - like the "Gorbasms" liberals experienced over Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev - fake. I know that (R) next to Schwarzenegger's name excites the White House, but his own words prove he's not a conservative. I call this "The Hollywood Syndrome," and it happens every time some actor-type says anything even remotely conservative. I'm not trying to cold shower anybody here, but don't look to anyone in Hollywood to validate your political ideas.

The American Prowler's George Neumayr detailed Arnold's politics in his article "Here's Arnold!" Quote: "[H]e spoke in generalities and banalities about his plans for the state. To the extent that he said anything, he sounded not like a fiscal conservative but a moderate Democrat. He said that he wanted businesses to come back to California so that the state government could collect enough tax revenues to provide social programs. This is the sort of obtuse comment middle-of-the-road Democrats always make, forgetting that businesses are leaving the state because they are tired of paying high taxes for those big government social programs."

More: "He has told the press he is 'very liberal' about social programs, supports abortion and homosexual adoption, and advocates 'sensible gun controls.' His entree into politics last year was a proposition Democrats endorsed because it raised state spending for what amounted to state babysitting - before-school and after-school programs that cost the state up to $455 million a year. He has complained openly about the party's conservatism.... Talk magazine described him as 'impatient' with the religious right.... [H]e expressed disgust with the Republicans who impeached Clinton. 'That was another thing I will never forgive the Republican Party for,' he said. 'We spent one year wasting time because there was a human failure. I was ashamed to call myself a Republican during that period.'"

Does this sound like "the Next Reagan," as some people are calling Arnold? Hardly. This guy may be the next actor elected governor of California, but that's where the similarity between him and Ronaldus Magnus end.

If you want an actual solution to the problem California faces you need to listen to those with real answers, even if it drives liberals apoplectic and you yourself don't want to hear it.

Liberals have destroyed California. It will take a hard-line conservative to mount a serious attempt to fix it.

People from other parts of the country (and many who live outside the cities on the West Coast) have a hard time understanding how completely the socialists (actually to be perfectly accurate: euro-greens) have won the war of ideas out here. Hopefully, their victory is temporary -- but it was a generational victory and the time it will take to create a new victory is not appealing.

No candidate, not even a celebrity as big as Arnold, can talk about cutting social programs openly and get enough support in the urban areas they need to win overall. The numbers just aren't there. He must couch his words and use misdirection and euphemisms like "business climate" (much like RATS have to fool the voters in other parts of the country). Out here, a Republican needs to trick enough voters into voting for him, because their natural position would not be to support anyone calling for government cuts or lower taxes. In fact, on the west coast, it is something a radical statement to support a better "business climate". Business is seen as the fount of all evil out here.

The entire west coast is a greener-commie-anarchist mess. The entire coast has gone insane. Sanity and reality will need to be delivered and re-entered into the public sphere in measured doses. The west coast public at large will not give up their cozy utopian haze that easily.

Arnold may be saying we need to bring business back (conservative view) THEN we could afford social programs (liberal view) but AT LEAST HE HAS THEM IN TH RIGHT ORDER.

For my bet that is one HELL of a lot better than ANY of the other socialista or RINO's out there.

I usually make a lot of sense AAABEST. After all, I'm a staunch fiscal conservative and a social cosnervative in the tradition of Reagan. But the problem you and others have with me is, I'm a loyal Republican most of the time and I support PresBush. Truth is, I'm not an impractical ideologue or reactionary absolutist. I know sometimes, a politician has to compromise and negotiate. I just wish PresBush would get serious with spending and cut the discretionary portion of the federal budget. America is at war and that's the #1 priority right now, but I believe the Bush-Cheney administration can handle terrorism and be fiscally responsible at the same time.

Good discussion. We managed to completely lose the war of ideas (partly with our own fratricidal shenanigans--the "base" and the "grass roots" in CA are the ficklest bunch of weasels I've ever seen). Now we're going to have to restart the war--one piece at a time.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I've wondered if anyone has attempted to separate FReepers on their stances regarding this California crisis?

There seem to be the Californians who are genuinely interested in getting their state back on track by electing the person they think best suited to that task.

Then, there are the conservatives who want to get a conservative in the governor's office in the hopes that the state will turn toward Republican candidates, ie. Bush, in the Presidential elections.

Also, there must be a group of FReepers who are simply stockpiling popcorn for the Oct. 7th debacle and kicking back to enjoy the fuss, figuring that *anything* that happens to California is, for the most part, well deserved. (That presupposes that only bad things are going to happen, as the state has really gone too far off the rails to be saved at this late date).

I count myself among that third group. It's been high good entertainment watching California's degenerate spiral after listening to them for several years trumpet what a model society they possess and what high, compassionate moral ground they occupy. Oct 7th: recliner, remote, refreshments, wait for the looting to start.

As a local talk show host pointed out here last night-----I have yet to see the "socially liberal" but simultaneously "fiscally conservative" elected official. They would love to have you believe this but it never turns out to be the case. Jesse Ventura was case in point. He was elected on precisely those terms and turned out to be just as fiscally liberal as any of the democrats (except for yelling at some university student about paying for her baby on local TV.)

Their socially liberal sensitivities are at odds with their alleged fiscal conservatism, and apparently the liberal side ends up winning in the end. In order to be fiscally conservative you must tell all those liberal social programs "no", therefore you are conflicted.
