Did you know that the population of the City of New York is greater than the combined populations of Philadelphia, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Ft. Lauderdale? What works in otherplaces may not be practical in New York City.

I'm very familiar with New York City. I was born there and lived there for most of my life. NY is very large

But what matters is the population density at any particular place. The population density in NYC at 14th Street and 5th Avenue is not much more than the density in Philadelphia at 19th and Market. The key data is, on average, how many people will be in any likely bullet path before the bullet is stopped by the wall of a building (a brick wall or a thick glass wall will both stop a bullet from traveling further).

I thought Ft. Lauderdale was the sixth burrough of New York City (at least it seemed like that when I lived there).

Found the following article about Davis's 2001 election campaign. It's the Village Voice, a highly suspect source, bu there's some interesting stuff.

Can't Buy Him Love: Brooklyn Machine Lines Up for James and Against Davis

Can’t Buy Him Love
by Ruth Ford
September 5 - 11, 2001

For the past eight years, James Davis, a cop-cum-minister, has hosted a once-a-year 'Stop the Violence' march in Crown Heights. This year, the Kings County Democratic Committee is engaged in an effort to block Davis's run for the Fort Greene-Crown Heights city council seat.

The charges against the cop-minister are varied and severe. Along with his impolitic statements about members of the party, Davis had the temerity to run for the assembly seat held by Clarence Norman, the head of the Kings County Democratic Party, and though he lost, Davis managed to snatch Norman's job of district leader. Such a thing was nearly unheard of, and for the county, it's payback time.

Though there are six candidates running for the 35th City Council seat, up for grabs because of term limits, only two matter to the county machine: Letitia James, 41, a former deputy state attorney general, and Davis, whose nonprofit, Love Yourself/Stop the Violence, is merely a cover for illegally moving money from his ministry to his campaign, say his critics.

"Ask Mr. Davis what he has done with all this money" for Stop the Violence, suggests Letitia James. "There's been no institution building. He's done nothing to reduce violence in the community, other than have a march that attracts 100 people" a year, says James.

Brooklyn congressman Major Owens calls Davis a "reckless" man who has tried to build "a cult of personality." "[Davis's] Stop the Violence literature that he sent out is the same as the fliers for his campaign. He's using his nonprofit tax status to promote himself as a candidate," says Owens. Adds the congressman, "He has enough name recognition that people identify with that [organization], and he has used that, I think, maybe illegally and unethically."

Asked whether it is true, as Davis claims, that Owens suggested he pull out of the Crown Heights race and run instead in Flatbush, the 20-year congressman fiercely rejects the claim. "James Davis is a liar. He is a loose cannon. I never talk to James Davis. I'm afraid of James Davis," says Owens.

"Whenever they get scared, they pull that on me," says Davis, of the accusations that he was misusing charity funds. Davis says he has a check from Letitia James for his organization, and maintains his record keeping is on the up-and-up. Stop the Violence is an eight-year-old offshoot of his federally tax-exempt ministry, Jesus Christ House of God, says Davis. His ministry has 40 followers. They meet for worship in his house, says Davis. It was "anti-Christian" of Letitia James to suggest he was abusing his tax-exempt status, says Davis. "I've been preaching the gospel for 20 years," he says.

"I took the district leadership right from Clarence Norman's front yard," adds Davis with glee.

This week, in response to steady lobbying from Norman, Owens pulled back from his favorite candidate for the 35th City Council race, Bill Saunders, and switched his support to Letitia James. Though Saunders, as an aide to State Senator Velmanette Montgomery and a district leader, has good connections to the community, says Owens, there were bigger concerns.

"Tish James has done a much better job of organizing, getting money, and building support," says Owens, who claims he is concerned that voters will be split among the most recognizable candidates: Saunders, Letitia James, and Peter Williams. That kind of split would give Davis a wedge the county is determined to see he doesn't get.

"I personally asked Letitia James to run, going back two years," says Norman, who calls James a "brilliant" lawyer and the "most qualified" of the candidates. "She's better known than Pete Williams," says Norman. Williams, a housing director at the National Urban League, ran for the 35th City Council seat in 1991, garnering 40 percent of the vote.

Williams, who helps municipalities deal with the problems of affordable housing, believes a "housing trust fund" supported with dollars from developers who receive tax breaks on their commercial projects would help expand the city's pitiful supply of affordable housing. To improve schools, Williams recommends a $5000-a-year (for five years) bonus for experienced teachers to work in the city's worst schools to improve student grades, at a cost he estimates to be $45 million.

Learning from a reporter that Owens had dropped his endorsement, Saunders did not want to comment. "I have no reaction," said the candidate, now in his seventies. "He hasn't spoken to me."

Sidique Wai, 53, another candidate and president of the United African Congress, shrugged off the county machinations this week. "The county machine has a right to back who they want to back. I'm going to concentrate on getting my message to the people," says Wai, who is also running on the Independent and Liberal Party lines.

Abraham Wasserman, a Lubavitcher who has gained the endorsement of the Crown Heights Jewish Political Action Committee, says his candidacy is the "next logical" step in his civic activism, which includes starting a block association and chairing the environmental committee of Community Board 9. Wasserman, 51, a project scheduler for Muss Development and the first Hasidic Jew to run for City Council, is noncommittal about the disappearance of his posters at the Franklin Avenue station. Could be bad weather, says Wasserman. "It's been raining."

Councilman Davis, Suspect Killed in City Hall Shooting

By Dan Janison, Curtis L. Taylor, Bryan Virasami and Ellen Yan
Staff Writers

July 23, 2003, 6:12 PM EDT

A political opponent gunned down City Councilman James Davis in the balcony of the City Council chamber today before being fatally shot himself by a police officer attending the City Hall meeting, the mayor said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, looking shaken, told a news conference a few hours after the 2 p.m. shootings sparked panic and chaos in the city's corridors of power that it appeared Davis was killed in a dispute with the gunman, identified as Othniel Askew, a relatively little known candidate in a three-way race for Davis' Brooklyn council seat.

Bloomberg said Davis and Askew arrived at City Hall together at 1:45 p.m., entering through the west gate. As an elected official, Davis did not have to pass through the metal detector and since Askew was with Davis, he apparently also entered City Hall without being checked for weapons.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Askew, 31, who was dressed in a blue suit, was seen "repeatedly firing shots" at Davis with a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson silver gun. The officer in the galley below fired six shots at Askew, who died later at NYU Downtown Hospital with multiple gun shot wounds.

Pandemonium broke out in the chambers as the shots fired out.

"We had just completed the ceremonials and I heard something like a firecracker, I turned around and looked and I saw a slim tall guy up in the balcony with a silver gun," Kendall Stewart (D-Brooklyn) said. "He was brandishing the gun and when I heard the shots I hit the deck, I laid down there and played like I was dead. I heard about eight shots and people started running but I didn't move until I was told to."

From the website:

"It is with this spirit that, in 1994, James went on to reason with major corporations like Toys "R" Us and MTV. With Toys "R" Us, James took issue with their sale of toy guns that looked like real weapons because kids were mistakenly shot and killed by police officers who thought the toy guns were real weapons. "Kids are taking toy guns and spray painting them to look real because they are scared. They have no power, and out there on the streets, a gun, whether real or fake, gives them a false sense of power."

This man is a moron. Kids were robbing stores with toy guns. Instead of dealing with the problem at the source (kids with no morals) he gets Toys R Us to lose the toys.

Well, he was assassinated all right, but it doesn't remind me of Fortuyn in any way.

I just saw the interview clip with Charles Barron repeated, and yes I know Barron's a madman, but if he's telling the truth it seems like Askew was seriously mentally ill.

Barron said that Davis had brought Askew over to introduce him. Barron went to shake his hand and was rewarded with a look so intense it made him draw back ("I was like, 'whoa'"). Davis shrugged it off, said it was no big deal, don't worry, "the guy's military but he'll calm down soon". As Davis and Askew were leaving he said to Barron, "By the way, this guy used to be against me, now he's with me." Apparently Askew had decided to withdraw his name from the race and join Davis' campaign staff instead. That's why he was there as Davis' guest.

Strangely enough, it's now come out that Askew filed a complaint with the FBI (!) a few hours before the shooting, claiming Davis was harassing him. The FBI turned the report over to the NYPD this afternoon, after they heard about the shooting. And that's all we know.

But it sounds like Askew and Davis knew each other all too well, as opposed to Fortuyn and the vegan.

FRom NY1:

http://www.ny1.com/ny/NY1ToGo/Story/index.html?topicintid=1&subtopicintid=1&contentintid=31940

The man who shot and killed City Councilman James Davis in an unprecedented attack at City Hall Wednesday was a one-time political rival of the councilman who may have held a grudge against him even as the two men appeared to reconcile their differences.

Davis, a first-term councilman from Brooklyn's 35th Council District, was gunned down by 31-year-old Othniel Askew during a routine hearing in the Council chambers shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Askew, who was shot by a plainclothes police officer, later died.

Askew had initially planned to run against Davis for his Council seat in the upcoming election, but the two men had recently decided to join forces. Sources say they began the day at Davis' Brooklyn office before going to City Hall together.

At an early evening press conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that video cameras at City Hall recorded images of the two men speaking to each other as they entered the building. Both men walked around the building’s metal detectors, because Davis' position as a councilmember allowed him to bypass security measures.

Once inside the Council rotunda, Davis introduced Askew to several colleagues as a former opponent who was now working with him.

"This is the guy who was once against me, but now he's with me," Councilman Charles Barron quoted Davis as saying.

Councilman Kendall Stewart also said he had spoken with Askew before the shooting: "We had just had the conversation that he had made peace with his opponent and that he would be working with him."

However, Davis' relationship with Askew may not have been as close as it appeared.

An FBI official tells NY1 that Askew had filed a complaint against David with the bureau only hours before the shooting. According to the FBI, a man identifying himself as Askew phoned the New York City FBI office late Wednesday morning to report that Davis had been harassing him in connection with the upcoming primary election.

Askew made no threats of violence against the councilman.

The FBI official says that the information was forwarded to the bureau's Public Corruption Unit, and was later passed on to the New York Police Department after news of the shooting broke.

The NYPD is continuing its investigation of the incident.

Dead is Dead. Familiarity or not.

What I meant was, this seemed like a highly personal situation, as opposed to a stranger murdering a politician for ideological reasons. It sounds like Askew just flat out hated Davis and had become obsessed with him. We'll hear more about that.

So, was this MAN a socialist liberal D,rat or what? Oh, I thought you knew. We only have three Republicans on the City Council, and they're all from Staten Island.

The 48 others are all Democrats, Very Liberal Democrats, Socialists, or Communists like Barron.

Davis was one of six or seven people to vote *against* the property tax increase, and was a former cop, and couldn't stand Gifford Miller, so I'd peg him as a regular Democrat.
