I made a plain statement, I said that it was not only the Democrats trying to do that, that there was some of that going on here.

If you don't think that's a true statement, you are nuts.

I have read the posts to 798.

I was in college when the original film aired, and know the original incident.

I understand the cartoonist's work and political bent.

I appreciate that there are so many perceptive, sensitive and thoughtful minds here assembled to extol the extant cartoon.

Its wonderful subtleties and nuances are lost, I fear, on the vast hordes of public school ritalinites who are looking for fun.

The intent of the cartoonist, and his constitutionality to the contrary notwithstanding, the effect of the cartoon may be lethal.

I don't like being lumped in with democrats by folks who make careless comments on this forum.

You two are well-known here. Luis isn't lumping you in with democrats, no how, no way.

You're both stand-up FR guys - work this out.

I know you mean well here, but you're not the person who gets attacked on this forum for disagreeing with Bush on issues.  Even I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't for the fact that even on threads where I support the president, people come along to attack because I'm supposedly trying to mislead forum participants.

As I stated before, Jim Robinson boots folks who are democrats trying to cause trouble.  He even boots some conservatives who don't know how to debate without doing their damndest to insult and offend.  Fine.  That leaves a pretty select group here that are mostly conservatives, or at least people who are able to talk civily.  So I'm going to ask you again, who was Luis talking about?  Who on this forum is trying to kill Bush politically?

There's only one group he could have been talking about, and that is the reasoned opposition to some of Bush's policies.  It's insulting to be refered to this way and I'm tired of watching people think they can slander other conservatives for simply opening their mouths to express their opinion.

This should be real easy to prove then Luis.  Please point me to places on the forum where people are taking the president to task for lying about WMDs.  Please point me to places on the forum where people are backing the several poiticians who have called for Bush's impeachement.  Please point me to just a few places where people on this forum have been backing Ted Kennedy's, Tom Daschel's, Hillary Clinton's and other leftist's comments about Bush.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you. I appreciate your comments. Look, if I read a post and try to remember every comment in a paragraph or two, I don't respond to all points raised. I lose some of it. It just seems natural to repost the text I'm responding to. And if it's an issue that I know there's going to be some serious disagreement on, then I do it in part to leave no doubt about exactly what was said that I am responding to.

The toon is pretty sophisticated, if you think about it. Ramirez is saying that what might bring his presidency down (though extremely unlikely) is petty politics, not substance. The fact that Ramirez is using an icon of injustice to the left as his inspiration is exceptionally relevant.

I note another thing, and I think it very important to interpreting this cartoon. The image of Bush is a "Caraciture"... much more so than other cartoons Ramirez has done of Bush in the past... while the rest of the cartoon is drawn much more realistically while still maintaining the cartoon genre. There MUST be a reason for this difference.

My thesaurus lists two synonyms for "caricature." The first synonym is "cartoon" and that certainly can fit the bill... but the second synonym is "misrepresentation," which fits MUCH CLOSER what is being done to Bush.

I believe that what Ramirez is depicting is the fact that the left has erected a CARICATURE, a misrepresentation of Bush by falsifying what he said in the now famous 16 words. It is that caricature that "Politics" is attempting to kill in this cartoon, not the real Bush and his very true statement.

This has to be the reason for the differing styles drawn by Ramirez... and it is profound. This is a very DEEP cartoon... and brilliant!

Oops, forgot to finish with my thought...

This cartoon is a political pun in cartoon form... to my mind the title of this work of are should be:

"Caricature Assassination!"

>You realize the cartoonist is conservative, right?

Really? Great. I have no sympathy for him because of that. Any potrayal of assasination of the president is illegal and the offending party will be notified. Let's just say I'm confident this guy won't make the same mistake again.

LOL- keep trolling. With every protest you make, you're more hysterical. Any portrayal of assasination of the president will be met with scrutiny and the offending party will be made to understand that this will not happen again. If we see anything like this from this "comic" again, I'd be very surprised.

:Screaming obscenities in the President's face, sending threatening mail to the White House, or publicly stating a desire to see the President harmed are not only acts of shameful disrespect, they should always be considered threats under the law . (usgovinfo.about.com)

The cartoonist's portrayal can be seen as advocacy and therefore he will be approached by SS. No need for you to post again, since you've posted the same thing over a dozen times already- adding nothing new or insightful along the way.

Interesting that the cartoonist added a mosque in the background to make sure the viewer understands that Iraq will be Bush's demise like Vietnam was Johnson's.

Not necessarily. Remember, the triggerman's side lost the PR battle back then.

You want to shut down a newspaper?

Damn straight they should be shut down. They just threatened the life of the President of the United States. Not to mention being a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States.

So thats what it looks like to 'be hung by 16 words'

I am surprised there is no uproar about this one yet. People seems to be a little dense at symbolism around here.
