"This is a failure."What's truly a monumental failure here is us. And this cartoon is a huge success in pointing that out.
Something this simple appears to be beyond the comprehension of the majority of the posters on this thread, and we at FR are supposed to be at the forefront of political savvy in the U.S., or at least I thought we were. I have my doubts these days.
As a people, we have reached a point that we can only understand that which is so crystal clear that there can be no possible mistake in its meaning. Having spent decades being dumbed down by everything from pulp fiction, to Hollywood, to television, we appear to be unable to think critically, and to see the meaning of things beyond their appearances.
The shower murder scene in the original "Psycho was one of the most frightening movie scenes I have ever seen. Today, unless they literally show the knife penetrating Janet Leighs nude body, and body parts dropping on the white enamel of the tub, most moviegoers will most likely yawn it at.
The opposition is trying to politically assassinate George Bush. The backdrop portrays the issue being used to do it, and it isnt Vietnam this time, but a similar attempt at freeing a people from oppression.
It's the very same thing we say day in and day out in FR.

If the cartoonist had ANY balls, he would have replaced Politics with Democrats.
Bump!

And that's what's so difficult about this cartoon. The mainstream interpretation of the original photo was that some "innocent" victim was executed in cold blood by a bad guy. The truth was that the bad guy was executed by the Police Chief. Yup!

So why not have Democrats on the back of that guy instead of simply politics.
Some could think Bush's politics is going to get him assassinated. Because of that, I think Ramirez is on trouble.

I don't like a gun to GWB's head, either. So we both don't like that a firearm could get pointed at the President. But this is a CARTOON, and one explicitly AGAINST Bush's assassination, to those too stupid to get it (and it IS stupid to miss that is the point). It is not a gun. The Secret Service should consider this no threat, the Republicans shouldn't be in arms over it any differently than any other political cartoon depicting violence, and we shouldn't expect the Rats to go off shooting Dubya as a result of it.
To be fair, if we are thinking that because this MIGHT incite assassination plots against Bush we should ban it, we should ban Rush, too, because the Rats think he's inciting hate and caused Oklahoma City.
It's a political cartoon. A CARTOON. Just because someone you like is in it doesn't mean it should be any more illegal than this one:
I still think it's silly that people want to ban anyone from saying things...anything...if harm hasn't resulted. If the idea of preempting has gone so far that anything that might possibly result in harm should be banned, better hand over your nail clippers to the nice federal agent now. Oh, wait, we already do.

Why not just democrats? Apparently you haven't been looking at the forums the past couple weeks. Democrats aren't the only ones that don't like Bush right now.

Never said it was a threat but that it was suggestive and went too far.
After all, JFK was murdered and who hasn't seen that footage? Therefore, I don't think images of guns pointed at any President is acceptable.

This is not meant to be confrontational.
Some of us remember the Tet offensive, and who the enemy was. If you do remember as well, perhaps you can understand how vulger and offensive the cartoon is; nothwithstanding whatever putative message it contains.

I know I'm late to the post (I've only read the first 50)....but please people GET A GRIP.
I know Michael Ramirez, the guy who did this cartoon. He leans to the right and spent the 1990s absolutely ripping Clinton, drawing some of the best and most biting toons in the country that exposed the fraudulent King we had as president.
This cartoon is actually sympathetic to Bush. Notice that it is not "the truth" holding the gun to his head, nor is it "missing weapons" or "case for war." Holding the gun is "politics." In other words, what the left is in such a tizzy about is a bunch of bullsh!t.....politics.
The toon is pretty sophisticated, if you think about it. Ramirez is saying that what might bring his presidency down (though extremely unlikely) is petty politics, not substance. The fact that Ramirez is using an icon of injustice to the left as his inspiration is exceptionally relevant.
DON'T YOU GET IT!! HE'S USING A SACRED IMAGE OF THE LEFT TO SKEWER THE LEFT!!
The left held up this image -- a South Vietnamese officer (or maybe he was the chief of police in Saigon. I can't remember) executing a vicious Viet Cong war criminal -- and passed it off as the American toady killing the freedom fighter. It was a lie, through and through (the morality play was reversed and perverted by the left) but the left used the starkness of this image to undermine the war for the freedom of Vietnam.
Ramirez is using this image in the same way. The fact that the left lied about what that picture was really about only makes the irony -- and the wit -- more biting. I think it's brilliant, and makes Bush look more sympathetic. BRAVO, MICHAEL RAMIREZ....who, let me repeat, is a conservative.....if a bit quirky.

Perhaps you and others have some fine points. But, depicting the death of a President is just not right. http://elections.harpweek.com/1Cartoons/cartoons-1864f.asp?UniqueID=10&Year=1864
To: Luis Gonzalez
Well, at least the casting would be a little more apt. She was after all on the side of the enemy during Vietnam wasn't she?
