None of us grew up in the Jefferson era, but he had it right about the press.

Point taken and I admit I jump to a rush to judgement

With that said, I am sure there are many like myself that didn't get the meaning behind this cartoon and took it to mean something else

This is not the first time some Leftist has done something like this. Anybody remember the Aug 4 2000 segment of "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn"? The one where he put the caption "snipers wanted" over a video of Bush's nomination acceptance speech? (I'm not going to insert the image here, you can click the link if you want to see it)

Why not? It is a brilliant cartoon, will get people talking, and is about as pro-Bush as you can get. He's telling you to feel sorry for the President, not to assassinate him.

"Uh, it was not a photo, it was an 8mm video tape (movie camera) taken of this NVC getting his head blown off. In the actual video tape this guy drops to the ground like a sack of potatoes with blood pouring out of his head like a garden hose."

NBC aired the tape (without warning) and it took an hour to console my teenaged daughter who was very young while the Vietnam war was in progress.

This cartoon elicits the same initial reaction in many who have posted here...
Precisely.

The original photograph and video are MUCH too powerful to be trivialized in this manner.

SHAME on the cartoonist, whatever his intentions.

This cartoon is WRONG.
Not illegal, but wrong, nevertheless.

>>Be gentle with your fellow Freepers. We have every reason to be defensive and to expect the worse from the press right now<<

Boy ain't that the truth. You might even say that politics has a gun to our heads.

But to see why I am exasperated, see #397 as perfect example.

In the photograph, the bad guy gets shot.

That is not the way the situation was portrayed back then, however.

That's not the way I was taught it in school, either. This guy died long before I was born, so I can't put it in the same emotional context as people who remember it personally.

As educated conservatives, however, the truth should have some bearing on the discussion. The truth is that the guy who got the bullet was running around shooting people while out of uniform, ie in an illegitimate manner.

Depicting Bush as the VC combatant implies that he is equally in the wrong, and about to be executed by the harsh justice of American politics.

Am I wrong?

"It is a little frightening just how stupid and knee-jerking some of our fellow FReepers are."

Now there's a statement that surely does not belong in "Breaking News"

To those who say they're "scared" of the "stupidity" of some FReepers, I say, you scare pretty damn easily. Do your mommies have to tuck you in? Your arrogance far outweighs the "stupdity" of those you insult.

Understood. Go by a machine gun and when arrested tell the Judge you have a 2nd Amendment right to it. I think you do but the Judge won't because the 2nd Amendment isn't convenient in our society. Neither is the 1st.

We have made exceptions to the Bill of Rights to make things easier for the Government. The Judge in the Lacy Peterson case imposed a 'gag' order to make his job easier. His order clearly violates the 1st Amendment but his ruling will stand because the Courts have the power to trample on any Law to make their jobs easier.

They have the power but that doesn't make them right when they exercise the power.

Wouldn't take much to reverse the direction of the gun and change 'politics' to 'democrats' in photoshop.

Yes...now that you put those pics up...I see it.

Problem is...a gun pointing to the president IS a threat. You see from the reaction how many didn't get it. I DIDN'T get it until I saw your post.

This creates a problem to the naive reader. This implants a message....the wrong one. Bad move by the cartoonist and editor.

The paper printed a threat to the president whether he meant to or not.

No, we'd like to shut down the yellow journalism tabloid and use the confiscated equipment and offices to START a newspaper.

IIRC, the photo was big news and a blanket indictment of the type of people we were supporting in the South Vietnamese government. The shooter was the police chief of Saigon. It's liberal propaganda value was dimminshed over the years due to who the victim was. He was first depicted by the media as a helpless Vietnamese farmer but it eventually came out that he was a Viet Cong Lt. Colonel and a rather nasty one at that.

I am in the habit of googling people when they say something provocative. It helps me before I open up my mouth. I understand our attention spans are low these days, but sheesh.

He used the Vietnam picture as a starting point. He is saying "politics" in the negative sense of the word is attempting to kill the president. Considering that his last caricature of an american politician was a picture of Howard Dean morphed into George McGovern, it does give some context. Editorial Cartooning is not easy. 1 picture to get out your entire point. We are talking about this though.

What Constitution are you reading? Ever hear of a right to a fair trial - the 6th Amendment? Maybe those dang fancy-pants book-educated judges know something you don't.

There doesn't have to be an excuse for the cartoon. It is political and no excuse is needed. And anyone who ends any post with PERIOD! is trying to limit debate by asserting the absolute correctness of their position. It is arrogant to do that. Your view is not the absolute truth. Neither is mine but then, I don't claim it to be.
