If youre a Spanish-speaking Democrat whos looking for a presidential candidate, the Internet is one place to turn. But you might not find everything youre looking for.
As Democrats seeking the 2004 presidential nomination continue to jockey for position, the last few days have highlighted the increasing prominence of Hispanic voters in American politics.
On June 18, the Census Bureau announced that Hispanics are now the largest minority group in the country. This weekend, Democratic presidential candidates traveled to Phoenix to speak at a conference of Latino elected officials.
One of the most visible outreach efforts is on the Internet, where many of the candidates have established Spanish-language Web sites. But in some cases, not all the information has made it through the translation.
The Spanish-language site of U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri makes no mention of abortion, one of the most controversial topics in American politics. His English site has an "issues" section where "Right to Choose" is one of the categories, and also has a link to a January speech titled "One thing must be certain: The freedom to choose."
The Spanish site has an issues section that doesnt mention abortion and a section of translated speeches that doesnt include the abortion address; a Gephardt spokeswoman confirmed that the site doesnt currently have any reference to abortion.
Because of the strong influence of the Catholic Church on much of Latin America, there is a perception that many Hispanic voters hold anti-abortion views. But Kim Molstre of the Gephardt campaign said the lack of abortion references on the candidates Spanish site is simply because not all the English items have been translated.
"We are putting it up there," she said of the abortion information. "Its just a matter of being able to translate everything."
In fact, the issues section on Gephardts site includes a "Working for the Latino Community" link that is not on the Spanish site, although both make reference to the candidates "earned legalization" plan offering residency to certain immigrants who have worked and paid taxes in the United States for five years.
The Spanish site of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman - which is much less extensive than Gephardts - also makes no mention of abortion. Jano Cabrera, a spokesman for Lieberman, said the omission is because not all the English content has been translated.
"Senator Liebermans position on choice is one that hes made clear time and again, and once we have the capacity to translate everything on the site, we will," the spokesman said.
Among other major candidates, the Spanish sites of Sens. John Kerry, Howard Dean and Bob Graham all outline their support for abortion rights. Sen. John Edwards did not appear to have a Spanish-language site, and his campaign could not be reached for comment.
The campaign of Republican President George W. Bush, who will seek re-election next year, has only produced a temporary, bare-bones Web site. But the former Texas governor has made a strong push to gain support among Hispanic voters; according to the Associated Press, he garnered 35 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2000.
One researcher says abortion is an issue that might be a "wash" among Hispanic voters.
"Its more a function of immigrant status," said Rodolfo de la Garza, director of the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute. "The immigrants are much less supportive" of abortion rights, "but thats associated with being Catholic, with being religious, with being uneducated, with being much more family focused."
De la Garza also said the influence of Hispanic voters in American politics does not necessarily match their growing numbers. One reason, he said, was because many of the states with large concentrations of Hispanics "are not very contested," citing Texas, New York and California as examples. But de la Garza said Spanish-language outreach is important for symbolic as well as practical reasons. "You dont want to be accused of ignoring them," he said.
But in next years Democratic primaries, Hispanic voters could play a major role, said Molstre.
Arizona and New Mexico both hold early primaries, she said, and Gephardt will be traveling to both states frequently.
"Its a great thing for the community ... because it raises the profile of the Latino vote," she said.
In Missouri, Hispanics and Latinos made up only 2.1 percent of the population in the 2000 census, but that hasnt stopped the political parties from targeting them in campaigns.
WASHINGTON, July 2, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Spanish-language campaign websites for Democratic Presidential candidates Rep. Dick Gephardt and Senator Joseph Lieberman fail to mention their pro-abortion stand. While campaign representatives are suggesting the omissions are a result of not-yet-completed translations, pro-life leaders are questioning the motives behind the omissions.
The English-language site for Gephardt, lists the "Right to Choose" as one of the categories in the "issues" section and also links to a January speech by Gephardt entitled, "One thing must be certain: The freedom to choose." A survey of the Presidential candidates' websites by the Columbia Daily Tribune reveals also that Lieberman's Spanish site also fails to mention his pro-abortion stand. However, the Spanish sites for John Kerry, Howard Dean and Bob Graham all note their pro-abortion stands.
Cathleen Cleaver, Director of Planning and Information for the Pro-Life Secretariat of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, commented to LifeSiteNews.com, "In the last federal election here in fall 2002 it was very clear that holding a pro-life position is an asset for a candidate and holding a pro-abortion position is not. Now we are seeing people that are avowed pro-choice trying to hide their pro-choice stance from a population that is overwhelmingly pro-life."
Spokespersons for both Gephardt and Lieberman attempted to excuse the absent information by suggesting difficulties and delays with translations were the cause. "They say they are not hiding it but they were able to translate everything else," said Cleaver. She recalled the January gathering of all the Democratic Presidential candidates at the rally for the National Abortion Rights Action League noting that she had a photo of the candidates at the event. "That photo will come back to haunt them," said Cleaver. "Even if there is an effort to hide their pro-choice position I'm not sure they will be successful. they are too far out front on that."

"gracias mucho."
Yeah, once they go to college, they hate God and can't wait to kill their kids. Oh, and they vote Democrat.
That's a good word. Feels good just saying it.
"And it turns out, there are no Spanish words for 'abortion' or 'choose,'" she continued, waving her copy of the Mary Landrieu Spanish-English Dictionary. "Who knew?"
When these voters realize just how much the elitist Dems look down on them, they'll be a bit more likely to vote for Republicans (or maybe just become disgusted with the whole political process and vote less). If the Democrats can't hide their sneer towards Hispanic voters, it will cost them.
Takes one to know one, you idiot. Truly, what a bonehead. I'm trying to figure out what's worse - that he holds this view or that he actually opened his mouth and let it come out. But this dumb ole pro-lifer is too stupid to decide.
Alrighty. I thought you were trying to tell me something.
Bamboleo. Sounds good rolling off the tongue.
