Young men are running from marriage
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 07/02/2003 | Susan Reimer

Other than a 29-inch waist and a full head of hair, there isn't much to recommend the twentysomething male.

He is footloose and fancy-free -- except for the fact that he is likely to be living with his parents. It takes him longer to leave home than his women friends, and he is more likely to return.

He is, of course, sexually active and therefore at increased risk of unmarried fatherhood, but he doesn't especially like kids. He considers them a financial burden and an irritant in any relationship with the mother.

He is openly suspicious that a woman would try to trap him with a pregnancy or that a one-night stand would result in a pregnancy and a long-term parenting relationship with a woman he doesn't care about and doesn't want to marry. This fear, however, doesn't keep him from regularly waking up with a stranger.

He has no biological clock because he can father children well past middle age, so he is in no hurry to marry. He is looking for a "soul mate," and he believes there is someone out there whom he is destined to love.

Like a choice never to leave his mama? Actually the guy in this example sounds like an all-around loser who can't hold a job, buy a home or find a girl to marry him.

Sounds like your nephews have true character, netmilsmom. :o)

Unfortunately, there are men who live like dogs ... and women who join them ... in every pocket of the USA. :o/

Unless it is rape, then it is with irresponsible women.

Very true, Valin.

He's right. I've seen it happen to two of my male friends. On the other hand, any guy who gives love without a glove is an idiot. If you don't want kids, don't have sex.

Now, as a single gal, this article scares me.

If a woman doesn't locate a man to be her husband, it's because she sells herself cheap.

Well said!

I'm thinking of a particular friend that would love to be married..her standards are high (not unreasonably so though) and she hasn't found a man with equal standards as yet. Per my friend, there are too many men interested in the frosting but not the cake.

Congratulations and best wishes to you, your FRiends and the respective future spouses. I hope you are all blessed with children, in due course.

Children are a blessing FRom God, and why any young person would want to avoid marriage or children is just beyond my comprehension.

Now, if only my children would procreate and bless me with grandchildren, a large void in my life would be filled.

What SANE woman would want to take on one of these prizes and be his caretaker for him the way his mama was???

Golly! It looks like the whole "modern" approach to sex and gender issues hasn't worked out so well for women. Ummmmmm, will all the sociology professors start teaching their students to go back to a more traditional pattern of behavior?

No need. Decadent "untraditional" population will have negative reproduction rate and will be removed by natural selection. Other populations and cultures will take freed place.

Up until starting about 40 years ago, society was a complex web of traditions and rules designed to turn losers into men. Women demanded and got all that thrown away. Men are again free to be losers.

I will never understand why so many people seem to think(?) that just because it's 2003ce that men have changed since 2003bce. I've just reached the double nickel and it's really nice not being obsessed with sex like when I was younger, why sometimes I go as long as 5 mins. w/o giving it a thought.

Good way of putting it. Hard for the normal conservative types to get noticed.

On the other hand, I'm not that interested in the type that go after the frosting. So I guess I don't mind so much. ;)

In 1986 George Gilder wrote a most prophetic book on this subject titled Men and Marriage, subtitled Sexual Suicide. I highly recommend it for anyone's reading list.

In 1984, I was asked to review a sex ed course. I reviewed the hell out of it, to say the least, but I saw that the writers of the program wanted to produce a certain nihilism in the boys. They, 4th through 8th grade boys, were told about the POWER that they have and at the same time they were not taught about respect for other people, particularly for women. The essential message was, 'Just add a condom and you can use your POWER to the fullest.'

I think that the author of this article is generalizing a bit, however, she appears to be hitting on the end result of years of sexual training which claimes to be moral but really is not.

Too true, but I'm glad that these young men are the product of two loving parents who raised three girls to give morals and values to their children. I pray that all parents will do the same.
In fact we are now waiting for a visit from the nephew with three boys of his own. He timed those three jobs to have a vacation where most of the time he worked on his house. He is taking the last days to drive up and visit his old aunt. Funny how his boys are the same age as my girls!
Perhaps he will be the example for other young men his age.

Yes ---if a woman marries him, she's going to have two babies to care for ---one that might grow up, one that never will. She's better off working and trying to raise the kid alone.
