Publisher Lied About Hillary Book Sales

Here are some facts to smash the myths on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's new book: There were not a million printed. There were not 200,000 sold on the first day. There was not a "leak" to the Associated Press of the book's content. Hillary's publisher, Simon & Schuster, sent the data on Bill and Monica to AP. The American Prowler reports all of this.

More: Ann Coulter wrote a great column about this guy named Packer who made a big show of rushing to buy the book at midnight when it went on sale. He's quoted all over the place as a "man on the street." The truth? He's one of Hillary's campaign aides! Read this column, because it's truly amazing. The whole thing was staged. There weren't any real life book fans out there panting to get Hillary's book. This Packer guy was just part of the campaign. The Clintons corrupt everyone they touch, and that's been proven with this corruption of Simon & Schuster.

The Prowler quotes internal memos at the publisher: "Part of the plan to generate buzz on the book was the leaking of some of the most sensational tidbits that had been pulled together by three ghost writers for the former first lady." That was just an old trick to boost sales. You could run these sorts of scams 15 or 20 years ago before the new media, but not anymore. Not with us around.

It was easy for the Times to spell Packer's name right because he is apparently the entire media's designated "man on the street" for all articles ever written. He has appeared in news stories more than 100 times as a random member of the public. Packer was quoted on his reaction to military strikes against Iraq; he was quoted at the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Veterans' Day Parade. He was quoted at not one – but two – New Year's Eve celebrations at Times Square. He was quoted at the opening of a new "Star Wars" movie, at the opening of an H&M clothing store on Fifth Avenue and at the opening of the viewing stand at Ground Zero. He has been quoted at Yankees games, Mets games, Jets games – even getting tickets for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He was quoted at a Clinton fund-raiser at Alec Baldwin's house in the Hamptons and the pope's visit to Giants stadium.

Actually, Amazon sells all the bestsellers at hefty discounts. So does B&N. They can afford to do this because they buy in such large numbers that they get REALLY good discount rates (55%, minimum, on a book like this; regular bookstore "standard" is 40%). They also do this to pull in business, in the hope that the customer will buy something else -- or at least not buy something elsewhere.

A few years ago, Amazon started carrying books from my publisher. Being a small operation, he couldn't meet their discount schedule and wasn't going to risk a massive return situation down the road. They ended up taking a few books at 30% off -- And Immediately Listed Them At 35% Off On Their Website!!! Go figure. Now they only buy when they get an order. It does explain how Amazon managed to lose money for all those years though.

Greg Packer, first in line. You can't read this quote without admitting Rush was right.

Sorry, but Rush is wrong and you haven't read Ann's article thoroughly.

Two different lines at two different book signings. Two different men first in line.

Charles Greinsky is the politically connected person, while Packer is the veteran line attendee (thus, should not have been presented to newspaper readers as a true blue Hillary fan).

Lining up at midnight to buy Hillary's book is street theater for liberals. I suppose shelling out $30 to support the concept of Hillary is less dangerous than the pernicious nonsense liberals usually fund. Hillary has already gotten a record $8 million advance from Simon & Schuster for the book – the most anyone has ever received for rewriting history. Hillary's acolytes could buy enough copies of her book to rebuild the World Trade Center, and she's not going to pocket more than that.

Someone who knows the publishing biz, please tell me: How many copies of the book does S&S need to sell (at an average markdown) in order to make back the $8 million advance?
