Any good advice on books and sites about aspartame and nutrition? (no junk science please)

There are soooooo many nutrition books, and diet books on the market. It can be a bit overwhelming and confusing for a beginner like me to sort out the junk science, and voodoo gimmicks, from the well respected books, and web sites.
In the last couple of years I've been extremely tired, sleepy and fatigued for some reason. I've never really been into the nutrition thing, so I would appreciate any of your recommendations on good nutrition, and advice on the following:
1) Sodium. What's the story? How much is too much. How little is too little. Is it true that sodium causes water retention, and too much water retention is bad?
2) Aspartame. I love it in sweeteners (nutrasweek, etc.). I probably use between 100 and 200 packets a day. No joke. But I hear so many bad things about it. Is this junk science or not?
3) Water. I heard someone say you can actually drink too much water. Is this true? If so, how much is too much?
4) yams and sweet potatoes. I love them. I usually have a yam or sweet potato along with one broiled chicken breast for a meal. What are the draw backs on yams and sweet potatoes?
5) Body For Life Diet. I've lost a bit of weight on this diet, but I still lack energy. Any draw backs to this diet?
Please steer me away from the junk science and recommmend some healthy books and websites.
I appreciate it. tame.

well thank you...If you need to lose weight and for good health you need a life style change not a quick fix diet...remember die is the first part of diet!

YES Try a milti-vitamin that is specificly made for a women or a man. The needs for daily intake are different. I believe this will make a great difference. However do not expect to take it and then have a boost of enery. Make this a daily habit and within a few weeks you shoud see a difference.

personnally I would sty away from Adkins, your depriving your body of basic items and you will pay for it. Exactly what am I depriving myself of? Atkins recommends consuming vegetables in moderation and taking nutritional supplements. The only thing I'm particularly depriving myself of is sacharides [glucose, sucrose, etc. along with the starches built from them]. And since the body doesn't really need much of those I don't see a problem.

Haven't heard from you much. You laying low?
On a serious note, I saw someone ask about excercise..... It works for me. I mean, no doubt as you get older you need sleep, at least I do. But I also run a couple of miles every three days or so and it works for me.
Ping me, okay? Later.

Apparently, there is something in the carbination that makes you pack on the pounds. Atkins claims aspartame adversely affects the metabolism of dieters.

Tagatose, erythritol, and xylitol are interesting sweeteners. They are all lower in calories, safe for teeth, will not increase blood sugar or insulin levels much, are found in nature, and taste good.
Xylitol is known to inhibit tooth decay and ear infections.

what is the main difference between splenda and aspartame? Chemistry.
Sugar(sucrose) is C12H22O11
Splenda(sucralose) is Chlorinated sugar. C12H19Cl3O8.
Aspartame is a dipeptide methyl ester. Specifically- L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester.

I agree with you 100%!
My husband has been on Atkins for 3 weeks and has lost 15 pounds (give or take a couple). FWIW, Atkins is more of a way of learning to eat better and sticking to it, not just a fad. If you go off of it, of course you are going to gain the weight back (duh). Carbs are consumed, they just aren't consumed in the mass quantities that most people take in every day. The trick is starting with low carb counts and then increasing until you find what works for you to maintain weight loss and your goal weight (once it is reached). My husband feels good, has more energy than he has in a while and after the first day or two really had no more cravings for sugar. We use Splenda and I can't tell the difference between it and sugar (goes really good with my morning java). I am not on the Atkins myself but I am becoming more conscious of what I eat because of it. Our refrigerator is starting to look more healthy on the inside too :)
