NOMINATION THREAD FOR THE FREE REPUBLIC GAROFALO AWARDS
Thursday, April 17, 2003 | Kristinn

Posted on 04/17/2003 7:27:08 PM PDT by kristinn

Nominations for Free Republic's Garofalo Awards are being accepted on this thread.

The Garofalo--ready-to-eat stuffed crows on a platter--will be awarded to prominent individuals in the media and elsewhere whose histrionic predictions of doom and gloom before and/or during Operation Iraqi Freedom stand head and shoulders above all others for their shrillness, certainty, and apocalyptic ravings.

To be nominated, the person must meet the criteria. Documentation will be needed (not necessarily provided by the nominator) to provide specific reasons when announcing the winners as to why they were singled out for special recognition.

Ten Garofolos will be awarded. We will do our best to present them to any winners who attend the White House Correspondents Association dinner April 26 when the D.C. Chapter holds its 5th annual freep there of liberal bias in the media.

Janeane Garofalo, whom the award is named for, is eligible to win.

Nominations close Sunday, April 20 at 3 p.m. EDT. Voting will commence on a new thread soon thereafter.

I'd like to nominate Bill Press, on WMAL's morning show. I don't have documentation, and I can't think of a specific quote, but I'm sure he's said enough to earn himself a Garofolo. I'll check on getting that documentation.

kristinn,

Fine work at the National Press Club. Tim & Suzie really had it coming. Good ink as a result of it!

So many people are eligible for the Garfalo. In fact, quite a few deserve a lifetime award, not just a one-year deal. The trouble is that the judges, bless their hearts, have to read all that trash and twaddle to know who deserves the honors.

Congressman Billybob

Latest column, not yet up on UPI, and FR, "Who's Next?"

Latest book(let), "to Restore Trust in America."

Asner's a piece of work, but Mumia is off-topic for this. You're right, though, it is a classic.

Bashar Assad - During the sandstorm he got the impression that the US was bogging down. Based on this he made the decision to turn loose his guerillas into Iraq and supply them with materiel.

However he miscalculated and soon thereafter Baghdad fell leaving Bashar Assad as the only Middle Eastern country holding the bad and lining itself up as the next target. Even Iran closed its borders and made nice-nice sounds. Bashar stuck his head up and found himself to be alone.

So I nominate Bashar. His miscalculation and misreading have the largest consequences of any of the mistaken analyses of the war...possibly his head.

I would also nominate the doofus who stood up at the CentCom press briefing and asked why he was there. Only to be slapped down by General Brooks.

"This invasion of Iraq, if it goes off, will join the Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Desert One, Beirut, and Somalia in the history of military catastrophe. What will set it apart, distinguishing it for all time, is the immense--and transparent--political stupidity."

--Chris Matthews, San Francisco Chronicle, August 25, 2002

WOW! He really said this? Most folks know that Chris M isn't one of the brightest in his profession,by far, but this truly takes the cake. What does he say now? What do the folks at CNBC and MSNBC who have to deal with the commercial consequences of his spectacularly idiotic pronouncements have to say now?

I'm thinking it over, maybe you need categories with 10 in each, there are just WAY TOO MANY candidates.
