[history]
The aircraft carrier Nimitz has received deployment orders, and is set to leave San Diego with its battle group early March, bound for the Persian Gulf. A Navy official, who asked to remain anonymous, said the Nimitz will relieve the carrier Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed since July and is already more than a month overdue returning to its homeport of Everett, Wash.

Get 'em, boys!
To: Excuse_My_Bellicosity
The Nimitz will arrive too late to see anything except mop-up action, but the boys at the Lincoln will deserve a trip home.

My nephew will be on board. He was just home this past weekend, and spent most of his time with his girlfriend :-) Go get 'em, Matt!

I wish you'd stuck USS in front of the respective carrier names, otherwise it sounds like Nimitz is a bathroom attendent and Lincoln just finished taking care of bathroom business!!!

Sorry, I copied and pasted the original title.

My son is on the Lincoln and this is the first word we have had on when he would be returning.
Thanks for posting this!!!

FYI -- first deployment for
Nimitz since RCOH. Godspeed.
OTOH, I saw in the Norfolk paper this AM that the GW has been relieved and is headed for dry dock. This makes at least 3 (maybe 4 -- not sure of the JFK's status) carriers that are currently out of service. The Navy is once again stretched dangerously thin, especially if that nut in NK goes off.

After the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor the USA was left short of battleships, but still had carriers.
The first carrier groups were formed.
The carrier group won the naval war in the pacific.
Since then the carrier group has been a major way of projecting US power.
I can't remember who it was, but one of Reagan's critics in the '80s admitted that the advantage of a carrier is that it can be moved.
Try that with an airbase. :)

I seriously doubt that the Navy was intending to show any disrespect. Instead they are using simple jargon, where all reasonable people who read the Times, and are up to speed on the ships, understand what is being said.
You are also referencing the headline, not the article itself. In the article they clearly say "the carrier, Lincoln or the carrier Nimitz.
sheesh
To: LibKill
If you have not already read it, I would suggest "Carrier" by Tom Clancy.

LOL, thanks for the chuckle. I love it!!

"Nimitz ordered to sea; will relieve Lincoln"Sounds mildly homosexual to me.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
To: Excuse_My_Bellicosity
My guess is that the Nimitz will sail near top speed (40 knots or more?) to get to the Gulf as quickly as possible and planes from both the Lincoln and the Nimitz will participate in the attack. The Lincoln will then head home after a few days leaving the Lincoln to patrol and mop up.

Geez, whatever happened to "Loose Lips...." Since this was PUBLISHED in the NAVY TIMES it seems that the NAVY did not intend this to be a secret order.
Come on guys, a little common sense on the postings.

The Lincoln will then head home after a few days leaving the (Nimitiz) to patrol and mop up. Damn. Your absolutely right. I was thinking (wishfully so?) that the Lincoln would sail home directly. But yes, your post makes sense. Plus the super Hornets on the Lincoln. They will come home after the opening salvo's have been delivered.

Nimitz ordered to sea; will relieve Lincoln Lincoln is what, 194 years old? The old guy needs a break! Send out the relatively sprightly 118 year old Chester Nimitz, forthwith!

How about if you develop a sense of humor?
I know all of the carriers by name, CVN-?? number and plenty of facts about Naval weapons systems to make most people blue in the face.

Sounds rather cavalier to me.
I played the carrier deployment game for over 20 years -- and in my humbly opinion, "If something can go wrong, it will." to turn the old phrase. I suspect that this one will not quite be the walk in the park that we all hope for. And, even if it goes smoothly, I remember one night in the Norwegian sea in the fall of '57 when in one launch cycle Saratoga lost three naval aviators and our Air Group in Essex lost eight...for a total of 11 deaths in 1.8 hours.
That my friend is what this is all about. And, 10 months away from home in "peacetime" IS one hellova deployment schedule -- in any man's language.
Tuff ball game DG. Treat it seriously. Respy, DKP/Coronado

Well, the Nimitz might not get there on time. It could only be around the Northern Pacific (Korea/Taiwan) at the time any conflict in Iraq breaks out. :-)
