After the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor the USA was left short of battleships, but still had carriers.

The first carrier groups were formed.

The carrier group won the naval war in the pacific.

Since then the carrier group has been a major way of projecting US power.

I can't remember who it was, but one of Reagan's critics in the '80s admitted that the advantage of a carrier is that it can be moved.

Try that with an airbase. :)
