Nimitz ordered to sea; will relieve Lincoln

The aircraft carrier Nimitz has received deployment orders, and is set to leave San Diego with its battle group early March, bound for the Persian Gulf. A Navy official, who asked to remain anonymous, said the Nimitz will relieve the carrier Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed since July and is already more than a month overdue returning to its homeport of Everett, Wash.

FYI -- first deployment for Nimitz since RCOH. Godspeed.

OTOH, I saw in the Norfolk paper this AM that the GW has been relieved and is headed for dry dock. This makes at least 3 (maybe 4 -- not sure of the JFK's status) carriers that are currently out of service. The Navy is once again stretched dangerously thin, especially if that nut in NK goes off.

After the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor the USA was left short of battleships, but still had carriers.

The first carrier groups were formed.

The carrier group won the naval war in the pacific.

Since then the carrier group has been a major way of projecting US power.

I can't remember who it was, but one of Reagan's critics in the '80s admitted that the advantage of a carrier is that it can be moved.

Try that with an airbase. :)

The post was taken directly from the Navy Times, so your gripe is with them, not the poster.

I seriously doubt that the Navy was intending to show any disrespect. Instead they are using simple jargon, where all reasonable people who read the Times, and are up to speed on the ships, understand what is being said.

You are also referencing the headline, not the article itself. In the article they clearly say "the carrier, Lincoln or the carrier Nimitz.

My guess is that the Nimitz will sail near top speed (40 knots or more?) to get to the Gulf as quickly as possible and planes from both the Lincoln and the Nimitz will participate in the attack. The Lincoln will then head home after a few days leaving the Lincoln to patrol and mop up.

Damn. Your absolutely right. I was thinking (wishfully so?) that the Lincoln would sail home directly. But yes, your post makes sense. Plus the super Hornets on the Lincoln. They will come home after the opening salvo's have been delivered.

Sounds rather cavalier to me.

I played the carrier deployment game for over 20 years -- and in my humbly opinion, "If something can go wrong, it will." to turn the old phrase. I suspect that this one will not quite be the walk in the park that we all hope for. And, even if it goes smoothly, I remember one night in the Norwegian sea in the fall of '57 when in one launch cycle Saratoga lost three naval aviators and our Air Group in Essex lost eight...for a total of 11 deaths in 1.8 hours.

That my friend is what this is all about. And, 10 months away from home in "peacetime" IS one hellova deployment schedule -- in any man's language.

Well, the Nimitz might not get there on time. It could only be around the Northern Pacific (Korea/Taiwan) at the time any conflict in Iraq breaks out. :-)
