Eight anthropologists who want to study an ancient skeleton must want until a federal court has heard an appeal of the case by four Northwest tribes that consider the bones sacred.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' decision, made last week, prevents any study of the 9,300-year-old skeleton known as Kennewick Man, which scientists have sought to examine since 1996.

The article says these remains are estimated to be 9,300 years old. Do the Indians or any other group have proprietary rights to ancient remains?

There are no Native American/American Indian (as we know them today) skeletons ever found in North America that are older than 6,000 years. The skeletons prior to 6,000 years ago belong to another racial group, like Kennewick Man(9,300yo), Spirit Cave Man (9,400yo), Buhl Woman (reburied) and etc.

When portions of Jamestown VA became an archaological site, some of my ancestor's remains ended up on display in a museum.

We feel privileged to help advance knowledge of those times.

Now, when we get to the Colville, Nez Perce, Umatilla and Yakama, we already know enough about Kennewick Man to suspect that the real motive these guys have is to hide the fact that their ancestors butchered and ate him!

Given its age, it is unlikely to be the ancestor of any of these tribes. They're simply assuming it is and their prime motivation for assuming so is political. Get over it.

Found in central Mexico in 1959, the five skulls were radiocarbon dated by a team of researchers from the United Kingdom and Mexico and found to be 13,000 years old. They pre-date the Clovis culture by a couple thousand years, adding to the growing evidence against the Clovis-first model for the first peopling of the Americas.

Of additional significance is the shape of the skulls, which are described as long and narrow, very unlike those of modern Native Americans.
