USO Canteen FReeper Style ~ Support our Troops Nationwide Rallies ~ February 21 2003
February 21 2003 | snippy about it

Posted on 02/21/2003 5:09:31 AM PST by snippy_about_it

Today we want to highlight the many upcoming Support our Troops and Patriot Rallies going on in our nation.

We hope you are able to participate in a rally near you or can make the trip to Washington D.C.

We want to show our troops, especially those forward deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom, that in fact America does stand behind her military. We also welcome support for our President, the Commander in Chief.

Folks, check out the links and find a rally near you, plan to attend and show your colors.

If anyone knows of a rally that isn't listed here, please feel free to post a link to it on today's Canteen thread.

From Angelwood: The Patriots Rally for America IV is a go for March 1, 2003 -- if you can get here to stand up for the troops, our Commander-in-Chief and our country, please do so. If you can't travel to DC, please try to make it to another Pro-America, Pro-Troops rally nearer to your home.

Our sources tell us that A.N.S.W.E.R. is still coming to DC on March 1 (as well as their "Convergence" on March 15). They are scaling back their numbers considerably, but they still plan to have staging areas and march to the Capitol with the main rally at 3rd and Constitution.

NEW ENGLAND FREEPERS: RALLY TO SUPPORT THE TROOPS IN MANCHESTER CT

San Antonio Rally

Dear Mr President:

Even as you keep your brave demeanor and tough approach to the current World situation, we surmise that in private moments you surely agonize over the weighty decisions that soon you will be called upon to make.

Our prayers are with you, and our support as well. We know that you will do the right thing, as you see it in your heart. You are a good man.

War is ugliness incarnate, and it is always to be avoided when possible. The day it becomes an attractive option, we fear, then we are all doomed.

But, to every season we must turn. Action now may be the only way to avoid a worse scenario down the road. That decision falls to you and the Congress. It is part of the job description. You must have known that when you signed on.

We don't envy you your task, but we will support you and our fine men and women in the military, as the future unfolds. Support in every way.

Of course, you will take a lot of criticism, no matter what you do. Stand strong. Your strength is our strength. As a nation, that is the way it must be.

God and history will judge us all, eventually.

Best regards,
RG Griffing,
Editor/Publisher San Antonio Lightning Newspaper

PS: Our heroes have always been cowboys.

Glenn Beck's Rally For America

Locations to date:

March 1st, 11:00 AM
San Antonio, TX
Rivercenter Mall Amphitheater

Nationally syndicated radio talk show host Glenn Beck and San Antonio radio station WOAI 1200 AM will host a Rally for America at the Rivercenter Mall Amphitheater.

Located on the gorgeous San Antonio Riverwalk near the historic Alamo, the amphitheater will host a celebration of American spirit and pride.

This event was conceived as a pro American freedom rally, to show the average Joe that he is not surrounded by the seemingly crazy people that much of our media focuses on. No, the crazies are surrounded by you, the ones in the majority in this great land, the decent God fearing hard working Americans that don't sue every time they spill hot coffee in their own laps!

The Rally for America is a group of people that are normal Americans; not media favored celebrities and money grubbing opportunist. The Rally for America is for the people that are the backbone of this country; people who despise war but understand that there are times when we have to fight a war. Both against our enemies abroad, and those within America who look upon the regular average American citizen as something less than decent and caring.

This event will feature local San Antonio KJ97’s Randy Carroll, Mix96.1’s Woody and Singer Beverly Houston + other Special Guests.

March 2nd, Noon

Church responds to troop deployment, puts ministry to military families into high gear

The church is able to help the community in other ways, not just in ministering to military families. Retired Lt. Col. Dick Chapin operates the church's food distribution center, providing groceries, food baskets and clothes to families on low to moderate incomes.

Of those families, about 35 to 45 percent are military families. Last year the church distributed 1.2 million pounds of food, helping more than 400 families a month. The church uses several part-time employees and about 35 volunteers. "We get the food from a variety of sources, including Wal-Mart, food banks like Second Harvest in Chicago and Capital Food Bank out of Austin."

Chapin said the church is able to also provide financial counseling assistance to a number of families, especially when the husbands are gone and the wives need assistance in taking care of the bills.

Soldiers who are in combat get a small increase in pay, but many of the soldiers lose the part-time jobs they hold during peacetime. As a result, sometimes the family income actually decreases when soldiers leave for the battlefield.

"The combat pay is tax-free, but it's amazing how many soldiers qualify for welfare," Rich stated. "The salary of the military personnel is not that great, especially for the non-officers. Someone who is an 'E-4' (an enlisted man with two stripes) still qualifies for welfare. It's a hardship in many ways."

LOL! I have been around awhile. I lurked at the Canteen from day one, but it took me 9 months to get up the nerve to actually post. It's nice to be with like-minded friends each day, showing our military, past and present, our support.

Yes, it's the name of his book but he mentioned something about a rally in support of the troops. I don't think it was a booksigning rally. By the time I realized what he was talking about and "tuned in" he was through! Exceptionally beautiful thread today. Good thing I have a cable modem or I'd be missing the fantastic photos!

Where's he going? Eric Hartge's dogs watch him ride a rescue basket into a helicopter after his kayak got stuck in the ice on Peachblossom Creek in Easton, Md. Hartge tried to rescue the stranded dogs after they chased a deer onto the ice floes. It took a volunteer fire department, three helicopters and a boat to rescue the trio.
