Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.
What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.
Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.
Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.
These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.
Please post your local reports here.
All my feeders and suet baskets have been busy all day, but I've also been throwing seed on the snow-- especially under bushes. I have to keep tossing more out as it becomes buried.
However-- awhile ago, a Coopers Hawk swooped down and flew off as quickly, so I guess he found what he wanted. I know--- he's God's creature, too, but I usually root for the little guys. When the Cooper or Sharp-shinned come by they fly from perch to perch looking for a meal. This time, tho - he didn't wait.
Towards that end, the 9/11 attack was designed by him to provoke an overreaction by the USA which would destablize the non-Islamicist regimes and radicalize the Arab populations. Bush thwarted Osama's plan at first, by restricting the response to 9/11 to simply overthrowing the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and ejecting Al Qaeda from Afghanistan.
However, by falsely tying the respone to 9/11 to Iraq and Saddam, Bush has finally given the kind of overreaction that Osama was originally looking for. If the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia was sufficient to radicalize a large number of Saudis, just imagine what the invasion and occupation of Iraq by US troops will do.
We are also doing Osama's dirty work by overthrowing non-Islamicist regimes; we are making Osama's wet dreams come true, by overthrowing regimes which the local Islamicists would never have any hope of overthrowing by themselves. Like Afghanistan (where we are slowly getting bogged down; hence the lack of media coverage), if we want to see our compliant client regimes stay in power, and not be overthrown by Islamicists, we will have to leave a permanent occupation force; this in turn will further radicalize the local populations. It's a no-win situation; a tarpit which the neo-cons controlling the Bush administration are in a mad rush to push us into.
Just because you support Bush's foreign policy, does not mean that you have to be stupid, and stop thinking about cause and effect, and feel you have to disagree with every opponent of the war, on principle, facts-be-damned.
Oh, yeah, and it's snowing like mad up here in New England
I feed the squirrels peanuts and the bluejays keep stealing them.
I just waded through the snow in my back yard and fed the birds and the squirrels before the heavy snow starts.
I was thinking either Cooper or Sharp-shinned, but don't know my hawks too well. Jays are always chasing these beautiful birds away.
Now I only use it when the grandkids come, as it is a source of amusement for them.
I had one of those electrified feeders, but the squirrels figured out how to avoid the 'spark'. Now I have two of the big feeders with the weight bar and it works quite well.
I also have several suction-cut window feeders, and it is a riot to watch the squirrels try to reach them. They don't reach them, but they don't stop trying. It's not as tho these guys are starving! They get plenty of food here. It is a squirrel haven!
A NJ friend at work bought a snowblower just this year. I betcha he's feeling preiscent(sp).
A Cooper is larger -- almost as long as a crow (not as heavy) and the tail is less narrow and a bit rounded at the tip.
The birds are scared stiff of these two. We always have a Red-Tailed Hawk in the neighborhood, but the birds seem to know when he is out to get them and when he is just looking for mice.
Stupid confession -- we forgot to check the garage door last night -- it was open !! We have 2 old but still working TVs out there that got slightly drifted on -- hopefully they'll dry out and work ??
It looks like you won't have to put up with the snow for too long, though. Temps later this week are supposed to be in the upper 30's and lower 40's for the Philly/NYC/Balt./D.C. area. You might want to look into getting the sand bags ready!!
We've had a little snow here at the cottage.
The front yard has three concrete benches, one near the lamp post near the center of the photo, one that would appear immediately to the left of the fountain and straight back, and a third that is out of range of the photo to the right. They're still there - just buried.
But I LUV this weather!!!!
But these crazy wacko make believe peacenik freakazoids are makin things tough on everyone...they waste taxpayer money with their disgusting presence and aggrivate an already explosive situation...
There's no doubt, we are definately living the result of 8 years of Clintoooon appeasement...there's no easy way out...
It's crazy here in NY....I have 3 feet right in front of my door...I'm goin buggy in this house...
Good luck up there, my friend...and take good care...
