What city is Clara from? Cartagena, Barranquilla, Medellin, Cali, Bogota? I think this needs to be factored in to my future post-FARC travel plans.
And a lot of the men -- divorced guys, I suspect (maybe, some of them, former adulterers themselves?) -- seem to think the hubby's treachery was no big deal. It's a sad sign of the times when even a "conservative" website is filled with folks who have liberal views on marriage, fidelity, commitment and honor.
It is useful to know who your bedfellows are. This thread has been very eye-opening....
And to further bolster your point, she could have cleaned him out with mental cruelty, and in their case he would have deserved surrendering half his estate to her. No, I'm not buying the moment of passion thing. She knew what she was doing, while she was doing it. She should have walked. Her kids wouldn't have the nightmare they do, she would have been well off and to be honest, the floozy he was chasing around probably would have dumped him eventually. Yep, he was a snake in the grass too as far as I'm concerned. What kind of man drives his wife to make a self improvement checklist anyway? But that doesn't mean he deserved to die.
Well, with the numbers up around 60-70% for adultery, among both men and women, then by your standards, more than half of our married population deserves to die. Or at least that their spouses deserve no punishment for killing them.
Every day, millions of people do selfish, mean, stupid things that hurt themselves and the people they love and who love them, and help or give pleasure to bad people.
There are alot of bad things that aren't against the law, but are often grounds for civil action., like DIVORCE.
She didn't find them in bed, but in a bar. Did she not brag to the step-daughter that she "could kill him and get away with it" before she did it?
She killed him because she was mad at him. She tried to make it seem as if she was driven insane by grief and love, two emotions that "sound" less culpable than anger. But if she was so grief-stricken, why didn't she go out and kill herself instead of him? (Note for the battle of the sexes -- 10 times more men than women kill themselves within one year of divorce.)
She killed him out of anger and jealousy. He wouldn't obey her, so she killed him in a very painful, sadistic way. She didn't do it when she first found out about the affair, so that "heat of the moment" excuse that sometimes justifies a temporary insanity defense wasn't there.
She stalked him(looked for him and found him at the bar), harassed him, assaulted him and the other woman, then killed him. She ran him over(that had to hurt), then while he lying on the asphalt in agony, she turned around and ran over him again(gee, that has to hurt), then she circled all the way around the parking lot and ran over him again, and parked the car on him(ouch!). Then she got out of the car and told him she was sorry.
That is NOT OK, cherry.
Some people called for the death penalty, some wanted to let her off completely, I think 20 years is darn near perfect.
She may not be a menace to society, but she is a menace. Maybe she's not a cold-blooded killer, but she's a "hot-blooded killer."
I am pleasantly surprised that a jury of mostly women did the right thing, here. The "we women get to do whatever we're want, cause we're special" crew is becoming a minority in the real world, even if there are still a few left here on FR.
If the relationship is not what you want, move on! It's NOT "OK" to kill people you can't control!
The circumstances where homicide is justified are very, very limited. Somebody wanting to be away from you is not sufficient justification.
Adultery causes BIG problems, for the victims, the perpetrators and society as a whole. That's why G-d forbade it. Ever heard of the 10 cmmndmnts? If the husband had obeyed the 5th one, this thread wouldn't even be happening.
Your heroine tore it apart even more since she's in prison for 10 years and hopefully more
I don't condone what she did,
Of course you don't.... </sarcasm>
but apparently you don't have much problem with what the husband did
He seems like a low life. I wonder what she did that drove him to such behavior. SEE.....GUYS CAN PLAY the poor, poor pitiful me victim game too.
- if you think the only result of adultery is "shame and embarrassment"
Whatever, and by your calculation hubby deserved to die for this. REALITY is our divorce court are clogged with women initiating divorce. Getting handsome settlements from their ex's. They seem to be able to move on and make a new life for themselves and children with their ex-husband's money.
So if this guy did not call his parents on their anniversary, he should be shot?
Good point. Maybe they were lying. Especially the person I've known for many years. Maybe they were lying when they told me about David slapping Clara around or hurting one of the twins bad enough for an emergency room visit. Or that right before David was supposedly going to cut the affair off with Gail Bridges David was acting like he had worked things out with Clara. Only to be playing lovey with Gail the next day at lunch.
They must have been kidding when they said that David was flaunting the affair in front of friends and employees while telling Clara it was all over. All while Clara was making their business bigger so David could have new toys to play with in his music room at the house.
People that did business with David must have been joking with me for some odd reason when they spoke about his screaming fits with people that worked for him. What a hot tempered SOB he was.
There sure was a lot of stuff swirling around. No matter. The jury has spoken.
Did I say she shouldn't be convicted? No way. I just took exception to your dismissive attitude toward the adultery that started this terrible episode going. I definitely believe Thou Shalt Not Kill, and it obviously goes for this wife too. I'm disconcerted that so many conservatives"" on this forum --- divorced guys to a man, I suspect -- apparently want to downplay the Fifth Commandment. You and I can argue over its importance, or the triviality of adultery and divorce; in the end, what we say doesn't change God's mind.
Indeed.
Imagine if Nicole and O.J. never got a divorce, and he knew that she and Ron Goldman were messing around.
Would anyone here still not want the death penalty?
Eye-opening...
Clara Harris did not INVOLVE Lindsay in the running over of David Harris -- Lindsay was the primary mover and shaker in the spying and following of David Harris -- but you didn't hear that in the trail. Clara just sucked it up and took all of the blame.
For example, Lindsay as you may know was spending the summer in Clear Lake City (working in her Dad's dental office) and she became aware on her own of her Dad's affair with Ms. Bridges. Lindsay had done her own "investigative work" to prove to herself that the receptionist Gayle Bridges was her Dad's mistress. Lindsay (even before Clara Harris knew) had confided in her grandfather (David Harris's father) about David's affair.
So, when Clara told Lindsay, Lindsay told her she already knew, that EVERYBODY knew. At that moment, Clara and Lindsay became fixed on trying to break up the affair.
The day of the killing, Lindsay was the person behind the wheel, driving the Mercedes around, looking for David and his mistress. Clara was too upset to drive safely. Lindsay had to point out to Clara which automobile in the parking lot was Gayle Bridges -- because Lindsay had already spied on her Dad and knew Gayle's car. Clara didn't EVEN know what kind of car Gayle drove. Lindsay had to show Clara which car....
And in the Hotel lobby, Lindsay was seen and heard saying "I hate you, I hate you" and hitting her Dad with her purse -- when he and his mistress got off of the elevator.
And after Clara had attacked Gayle and had to be separated from her -- a hotel employee "put Clara under the wheel" of her Mercedes -- and set the wheels in motion whereby Clara was trying to hit the Navigator and Gayle and David; everyone but David got out of the way. They had time to get out of the way -- but David was a control freak and thought he had control of Clara and DIDN'T THINK CLARA WOULD HIT HIM with the car. But Clara was out of control and couldn't stop the forward motion of the car and David was killed.
So, flame away at me if you want to. I think Clara in a way sacraficed herself rather than bring more pain to Lindsay.
Personally, I wish Clara didn't have to spend anytime in prison. She was truly insane and had no control over actions. Her husband drove her to madness.
stupid comment. Adultery inflames the heart of the victim - - I didn't make it that way, God did. Murder isn't an acceptable response, but if adultery were really no big deal - - something that didn't carry big risks of creating a conflagration - - - God wouldn't be so opposed to it.
One of the reasons I've resisted the temptation -- and I've definitely been in some situations where I've been tempted -- is because I know it can lead to violence; I don't want a bullet in my back, or anyone else's. That's not to justify a murderer in such a situation, just to recognize that, human nature being what it is, when you're playing with adultery you're playing with fire.
