Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.

In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.

There's a word for this: .

Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.

Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I rarely post on vanity threads. I usually ignore them. Then I read post/ping #3.

I know, I should not be on the 'puter, and I should be out Christmas shopping. Or at a bar, or a Christmas party...or...over at gonzo's...

I got put on your ping list. The problem I have is that without any involvement in the threads at all, I continue to be pinged over and over. I agree with others here that I should not have to freepmail to let you know. I think you should start over on your foxhole ping list and include only those who ask to be included. Thank you. Rant over.

I think I know who you mean too. When I just want to bump an OLD thread, I address a comment to myself and don't bother anyone that way.

I don't keep a ping list, though I will sometimes go to the trouble of doing just what you suggested--pinging everyone on one thread over to another one--if news relating to a hot thread develops.

How come we have a link to 'my comments'????? If I want to know what I've said to myself, I can 'talk' to my kids. I'd much rather 'we' know that someone has actually spoken TO 'us' in reply.

Pings are a way to let 'you' know that someone thinks you'd have an interest in the subject/ or they value your opinion/input. Unless, of course, 'your' role model is Foghorn Leghorn, who says,'Go away son, you bother me'.

A simple solution is to write the pinger a polite, yet private freepmail, requesting to be removed from the ping list. It takes 2 seconds. write the request in advance, then copy and paste it when you need it.
