OPT IN... "There already is."

Actually, EBUCK, there is not an "OPT IN ONLY" policy being enforced vs. the emerging one that is in all aspects "OPT OUT ONLY".

We do have some very discreet lists that the "keepers thereof" have wisely (and respectful of my preferences) chosen to keep within the site owners preference that we only ping those, who actually have requested to be on the particular list...

And then, there are the emerging lists and managers, who have apparently decided that unwanted spamming of ping lists is just fine. These lists ping us, repeatedly and unsolicited to the same threads over and over and over again, only after several emails to withdraw our names from the list, do they offer us the rather lame "you can opt out," option.

I think its abusive of other people's precious time. I know I find it extremely wasteful of MINE, and rather disrespectful of my preferences and subscribed interests.

In the past, the site owner's preferences regarding the proper use of "ping lists," has been that we don't put folks on ping lists who don't ask to be there.

Respecting the wishes and preferences of others, is a core conservative principle... and we should respect each other and Jim's stated preferences regarding spam.

"Although I am on a lot of ping lists I still check the lists located here...as a matter of fact, until the appearant rise of the master-pingers, this was how I tracked down all info on listed/specific subjects."

As do I... and I subscribe very narrowly to VERY few lists and most of those, for very short periods due to the very extreme constraints of my schedule and available time.

"Works just fine for me."

Well I am glad that the status quo works is suiting you so nicely, but that is actually the subject of this thread. You see, some of us don't want the pingers to force us to waste our time downloading links and messages posted in "MY COMMENTS (especially when we are on dial up connections out of town) who then say we can "OPT OUT..." We want our preferences respected and to preserve our right to OPT IN ONLY to those lists we choose.

We want to be free to NOT be part of, or sort through dozens of unwanted pings every day. Especially those threads we have no interest in, or find offensive... This WAS the original intent of bump and pinglists... and it has fallen into a state of abuse.

We go through this discussion every year. Usually at this time too. It is obligatory to let folks know once again that "spam pinging" is unwanted and NOT supposed to be the modus operandi for "respectful" freepers in the coming year.

"And if you don't want to be on someones list just request that you are taken off.Better to be solicited with info that may prove usefull, IMO, than to not receive any at all."

And of course YOU are fully entitled to feel that way. But for many of us, we would rather receive NO PINGS than to be called repeatedly to threads in which we have NO INTEREST and infact actually have a measure of palpable distaste for the subject matter in scope.

I don't think unsolicited pinging should be allowed.

Jim has talked about the abuse of pinglists before. And we should respect HIS position on this, as well as respect the rights and preferences of others... and stop the abuse, so we can enjoy the benefits of OPTING IN ONLY to ping lists.

FWIW... that is MY preference.

I did not know this site catered to parties...I thought it was an awareness forum. That is, aware of Constitutional issues. SR

Being aware of parties IS a Constitutional issue, dude... You know, in the spirit of the whole pursuit of happiness thing... "Spirit", get it, like "spirits", hehehe...

Sometime, at least two or three years ago, I wrote something objecting to pinging. I don't even remember what I said, but some people seem to remember it vividly.

Grin........love the key words. Like anything, ping lists have their uses. Also, like anything, they can be misused, overused, underused, and abused. Happy New Year, Kim!

Some of the busy-bodies think that, just because you live in a particular State, you need to be notified of every little non-event pertaining to your State.

No, they consider it a friendly gesture to draw your attention to things happening in your area, believing you might find it of interest. No one sets out to offend, just to inform. If you're not interested, fine, but that's no reason to slur the poster as a "busy body."

I didn't know there were ping lists back in 2002, and I've been posting on FR for 7 years.

I liked to be pinged to topics I am interested in, that way I will be sure to see an article I might have missed. I hope FR doesn't do away with pinging. I do think it is rude to ping someone if they did not ask to be pinged- unless they are mentioned in the post.

You and me both.

Back in those days, iirc, you could post to nonexistent FReepers.

I know what you mean. I get pinged twice every day to the Rush Limbaugh show. Yes, I listen to it every day but have never requested for anyone to ping me on it. How I got picked, I don't know.

The DUmmie FUnnies has the LARGEST PING List on the FR and it is 100% volunteers. NO draftees. EVERYONE on the DUFU Ping list asked to be there and when someone wants to leave, I take them off, no questions asked. BTW, the DUFU PING List now stands at 882 PINGEEs.

LOL. Hard to believe it's been three and a half years since I posted that screed. Time flies when you're having fun, I s'pose.

I'm still here (otherwise I wouldn't have responded), and still cranky as ever. ;-)
