You're the one that raised a hand at the end of the school day and reminded the teacher that homework had yet to be assigned, aren't you?

While a student at Gettysburg College from 1987-1991, I had two experiences that still raise the hairs on my arm when I recall them...

...While dating a local from a nearby town (which figured largely in the days preceding and following the battle) we were, "snuggling," one night and I was overcome with the feeling that we were not alone in the house (which was built on the foundation of a structure which had been in existence during the war.) As I brought it to her attention, we saw a Confederate officer walk by the doorway to the room we were in, peer briefly into the room, and walk on...

...about a year later, I received an art assignment which involved altering perceptions of mundane objects, basically making an everyday object seem dangerous. While most of my classmates were content to glue broken glass on a doorknob or razor blades on a toilet seat, etc. I opted to try something a little more cerebral. I've always loved calligraphy and had been studying medieval methods of manuscript illumination and decided to illuminate a dinner program for an, "evening in hell," where infamous guest lecturers would advance ideas on spreading evil. While doing miniature painting and calligraphy, I would frequently work with a jeweler's loop or with a desk top magnifying lens. While using vellum, gold leaf, some toxic pigments, inks and gums, I would wear a linen conservator's glove on my right hand to keep skin oils from contaminating the working surface. I'd then run a strip of drafting tape along my little finger and the outside of my right hand. As ink, paint, etc., would accumulate on the tape, I'd blot it on a separate peice of scrap paper to the side of my drafting table, while continuing to focus on the document I was producing. After an hour or two of focusing on the program, dwelling on the "guests," and their speaking topics, I sat back from the project and as I looked around, I noticed that the piece of paper on which I'd been blotting my hand held the image of a demonic face...not a Rorshach, "kind of looks like" image, mind you...but a realistic, detailed devil's face staring right back at me.

FWIW, I've never done illegal drugs in my life, and was stone sober during both incidents.

"Let's see which freeper has the freakiest story to tell on this Halloween night."

Today I had a freaked out engineer, a shrieking materials scientist, a sullen V.P. and a really sexy manager swirling around me all day. None could summon the mojo to get things to work! Boo!

" If you want to have a sleepless night, go and stay in the "Hotel del Sol" in Cadiz, Spain. In room 14 is something that will shake your bed every time you nod off to sleep. Moves the furniture too."

I suspect that's where they put the drunk tourists after a day trip to Jerez, the sherry capital of the world.

Back in the late 70's, I was working 2nd shift. I got out of work about 11:00pm. Took about 15 minutes to drive home. So, it wasn't real late or anything.

I got home, turned on the tv and went to the kitchen to fix something to eat.

It was winter time, and I was staying at my grandmother's house while she was in Florida for the winter. No one else lived there.

I was home alone, and had just prepared my dinner and was watching tv. Probably Johnny Carson. As I was eating, there were suddenly footsteps walking around in the upstairs.

At first I thought no way. But, they kept walking around. I could tell from where the sounds were coming from that they were heading towards the stairs.

Don't ask me why, but I put my dinner on the sofa, and ran into the bathroom. My first thought was that perhaps there was an intruder in the house. So, while in the bathroom I left the light off, but had the door closed.

I can tell you, that my heart was beating so fast and so hard. I heard the footsteps coming down the stairs. I heard them in the kitchen to the left of the bathroom. Then I heard the footsteps coming down the hallway where the bathroom was.

Then I heard the footsteps go down the stairs into the basement. At this point, I really started wondering, because the door leading to the basement had a hook and eye latch.

After waiting a few minutes and not hearing anything else, I slowly opened the bathroom door, and looked at the basement door. It was still latched.

I cautiously went back to the living room and finished eating my dinner and watching tv, even though my mind would wander to what had occured now and then. I slept on the sofa with the light on that night, instead of upstairs where my room was.

I have no idea what went on, but I was scared when the footsteps went past the bathroom.

Bad assumption, I guess. The sliver moon is the time of destruction. I assumed that a sliver moon was during a heavier gravitational pull. I do the best I can with my public school education. =/

But speaking of sliver moons and destruction, isn't it interesting that the sickle moon of destruction is a symbol of Islam? The time of darkness.

Here's my scary story from last year...

Absolutely terrifying! Always on the alert for an adventure I thought what better night than Halloween to explore the sinister, convoluted passageways of the DemonRatUnderground!! Oh the unspeakable horror!! I realized I was becoming confused and bewildered and that surely I had been transported to another dimension inhabited by chattering and shrieking aliens. My mind was spinning relentlessly and my stomach became so quesy I thought surely that one of them must be trying to eat its way out from the inside. Just when I feared I would be consumed by the darkness of the abyss I heard the faint echo of a familiar voice in the distance calling, "go toward the light; go toward the light." With the last ounce of strength I could muster I clicked my browser button, and I found myself back in the comfortable surroundings of Free Republic. Whew! That was close!

You know, Christmas is a pagan holiday too and was banned by Christianity for many years. So do you not celebrate Christmas as well?

So is Easter and even Christmas, IIRC. (That is why the Puritans refused to celebrate Christmas).

Many of our holidays have Pagan roots because the Catholic Church subsitituted its holidays ot cover the other holidays up.

I don't see halloween as necessarily evil.

That said, I celebrate Reformation Day, as October 31 is also the anniversary of when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses and thus, October 31 has become known as Reformation Day as well. But, nobody knows about that....lol

Highly symbolic, full of portent. Scariest Hallowe'en story so far. :)

When I was working in the Senate several years ago, Ted Kennedy walked onto the Senate floor and asked me what the vote was about.

You should have told him it was about legislation to regulate the prices of waitress sandwiches.
