WASHINGTON (AP) -- A conservative legal group said Thursday that the United Way should take back a $171,000 donation to an organization that is representing several detainees in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks.
Officials from the Legal Aid Society and the United Way's Sept. 11 Fund said none of the restricted grant is paying for work on the detainees cases, and is going entirely to help victims of the World Trade Center attacks.

No, I have nothing to do with them. Was just checking out their website to see who they are.
Never donate to the United Way. Their forte is funding left-wing groups like the Legal Aid Society, and punishing worthy groups like the Boy Scouts.
Right, I remember the UW head honcho, William Aramony. Had to resign after it was discovered he was living REAL high on the hog, charging all kinds of expenses to the charity etc.
Ain't this criminal misrepresentation? False advertising?
Freepmail me if you want off this ping list; no offense taken. Even if you mean it...

Yep...anybody stooopid enuff to give their hard-earned bucks to a generic money-grubbing charity like the United Way deserves to be fleeced. It's much more rewarding to give to particular causes that you can track their money-spending efficiency and their effectiveness in achieving their stated mission. I particularly favor giving to St. Jude's Hospital and other organizations that help sick and needy children, but there are a lot of wonderful charities out there worthy of yer donations. IMHO, the United Way ain't one of them!! But I do like their commercials with the NFL...LOL!!
FReegards...MUD
BTW...same way in donating to Generic Political Funds, I don't give to the Republican Senate Committee (or whatever it's called) anymore, because my money might go to re-elect a Senator--like John Warner--whom I abhor. Best bet is to contribute directly to a particualr candidate or to a group like Stephen Moore's Club for Growth.
As long as we (the people) continue to accept the existing tax code and the infrastructure it brings, we will continue to have scandals like this. It's only when the money piles up so high that the problems come to light. The next step is to do something about it, but appointing a federal commission to oversee a special-interest group is not the answer.
I've never given to the UW; they're too divisive. Their name conjures mental images of the two ducks who fly united...I don't know if you've seen this, but Bill O'Reilly has been beating this issue on "The Factor" on FOX News Channel too. I have thought about what he's saying and IMHO, I consider this the Charity equivalent of "bait and switch." Ya ain't gettin' what you're buyin' (BEING SOLD). If you are solicited to help WTC folks, THAT is EXACTLY where that money should go. If you contact a charity organization and tell them you want to help the WTC victims, then THAT is EXACTLY where that money should go. IMHO, any organization that doesn't do that, is criminally liable.Ain't this criminal misrepresentation? False advertising?
A conservative legal group said Thursday that the United Way should take back a $171,000 donation to an organization that is representing several detainees in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks. . ."They did not contribute to help the terrorists, their supporters or people arrested or detained because they violated immigration laws," the group wrote the United Way of New York.
Thanks for the ping, friend!
That is why I donated. We all received an e-mail message "strongly encouraging" us to donate to the United Way. I gave at the office, muttering all the way.
