For decades, American power in the Middle East rested on a Gulf architecture built around Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. That arrangement reflected the strategic assumptions of another era. It assumed that energy security required permanent deference to Gulf monarchies and that American freedom of action could be preserved through transactional understandings with regimes whose priorities were often temporary and narrow...That order is weakening. Gulf states increasingly hedge between Washington, Beijing, and Moscow...
The proposal is not simply to maintain radar crews or missile-defence officers, but to leave a significant standing US force in Israel and potentially shift assets now dependent on Gulf basing arrangements...
The strongest argument is deterrence...
A permanent American presence on Israeli soil would change the regional balance because it would make any major attack on Israel an immediate challenge to US forces themselves. It would reduce the temptation for calibrated aggression by removing ambiguity about the American threshold for response...
Such a posture would also reassure allies. Jordan, Egypt, and the Abraham Accords states all benefit from a stable order underwritten by credible US power....
Clear commitments prevent wars more effectively than vague promises...

A permanent base would allow the US to refuse to authorize Israeli military operations that might put US assets in jeopardy and thereby hamper Israel's tendency to use excessive force...
I thought our base was Israel.
CC
Netanyahu continues to evade a state commission inquiry into October 7th security failures.
October 7th wouldn’t have happened with a US base. In fact right where all the Hamas crazies came in; that’s where the US base should be placed.
But September 11 should not have happened either. Security failure.
An American base in Israel is not a bad idea. Our bases in Europe are illusions, imaginary.
I vote no.
I bet we’d get better cooperation than from the countries where we do have bases. Who knows, we might even get blessings from higher sources.
The U.S. should be closing bases in these countries, not adding more.
Somaliland makes more sense, strategically .
We don’t need to be in the ME at all.
I’m with you on this one.
“Somaliland makes more sense, strategically .”
I really like Somaliland, and how it’s now being recognized as an autonomous country and a huge 180 from Somalia. I hope Kurdistan can soon achieve the same status.
Actually we do
Imagine what oil would be at and gasoline if America were not there
You’d be crying every time you pump gas
Who pays for it? Don’t we give enough to Israel and Egypt?
The USA gives $3 B to Israel annually.
it could shift this to deployment.
Strictly from a GI point of view it would be fantastic. During my MFO deployment I spent every 3 day pass in Israel. The people loved Americans, especially GIs (that could change with the stationing of troops). My money was no good in bars and clubs once they found out I was an American GI. IDF girls strolling the beach at Eilat in micro bikinis with M16’s at sling arms was HOT.
The Brit’s were acutely aware that they were in the position of the Roman’s when they ruled the holy land.
That picture would be painted on Americans if U.S. troops were stationed there. No Bueno.
Here goes Condi, stoking division within conservatism better than any paid Soros troll.
For the record, I oppose American boots on the ground in Israel at all junctures. We conservatives don’t need the headache of people like Condi and worse using it as a wedge. Israelis are perfectly capable of doing the work as an ally.
Roger that!
My buddies and I volunteered for the IDF in Logistics through Sar-El.
One night during the war when there were exactly no foreign tourists, we bar hopped three bars. Each time, after we ordered our first round, they asked why we were in Israel, and each time, the head bartender showed up with free shots!
We need to leave NATO and pull out of Europe. We also need to close most other overseas locations as well. I like the Israelis but don’t want to have a base there.
“”””Our bases in Europe are illusions, imaginary.””””
What does that mean?
