PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Police are investigating after they say a car with an explosive device crashed into the front entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club early Saturday morning, killing the driver.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers were called to the scene of the club, located at 1849 Southwest Salmon Street, shortly before 3 a.m. in response to the crash.
Police say the car caught fire, and found evidence of an explosive device inside. The driver was killed in the crash.
In a notice sent out to members Saturday, the club management announced that the club would be closed until further notice, and that they were expecting a “prolonged closure,” without an immediate timetable for reopening.
Another car crashed into the building on April 8, injuring a security guard, though police at the time said there was no evidence of impairment or criminal activity.
At a press conference Saturday afternoon, PPB Chief Bob Day said that there was no reason to believe the events were related.

Spent a lot of time at the MAC when I was a kid, learned to swim in their pool around 1961 or so. I haven’t been in the place for many, many years now. I wonder if any part of the old original club building still exists, probably not.
