When anti-regime protests spread like wildfire throughout Iran in mid-October of 2022, the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was quick to lay the blame on the usual foreign suspects. “I say explicitly that these riots and this insecurity were a design by the U.S. and the occupying, fake Zionist regime and those who are paid by them,” he told a class of cadets at a police college in Tehran. He suggested that the ultimate goal of the U.S. and Israel was regime change in Iran.
This elicited a response on Twitter from Iranian rapper Hichkas, who defended foreign support for the uprising, saying that it represented solidarity, not collaboration. He ended his riposte with a taunt that was retweeted or liked more than 50,000 times:
“And you can shove that Mossadegh tale you’ve lived off of for a lifetime.”
The rebellious young hip-hop star was connecting dots that Khamenei had only implied: that in 2022, the United States and its allies were once again seeking to overthrow an Iranian leader, just as in the summer of 1953 the United States had cooperated with players inside and outside Iran to help end the political career of the doomed nationalist prime minister, Mohammed Mossadegh.

A long essay, filled with references that unfortunately are not easily accessible on the Web. Nevertheless, given the present conflict with Iran, and the fact that the lefitist, liberal, third-worldist story of what happened in Iran in the early 1950s has become the accepted version of the events, I thought it would be useful to read a different and more truthful version.

Great reference.
Regardless of the degree of US involvement at that time, the fact, which no one contests, is that there was a desire to nationalize the oil industry.
Leftists today will therefore side against the Shah because the PM was “fighting white colonialism”.
So even if those opposing US attacking Iran today want to claim the US was much more involved than described here, I say “So what?”
Wasn’t there someone else in more recent history that nationalized the oil industry within a country? Yes, that’d be Chavez.
Unlike the Iranian PM, Chavez remained in power.
How’d that work out?
So the agreed upon fact of nationalization, along with the counter-example of Chavez, could be used to justify ANY US involvement in Iran back then.
And personally, I have no problem w/the US shifting the levers of power (violently or not) to keep loons from running a country.
Those complaining that the most recent Shah was tyrannical don’t acknowledge that the crew running Iran today are just if not more tyrannical. The main difference being that the crew today is willing to export it’s terrorism, whereas the Shah was keeping it within.
And who exactly do they think the Shah was abusive to? Gee, that’d be the folks that fought him, took over, and are running Iran today. Now do you understand why the Shah was such a “cruel dictator”?

the CIA are not pure as the driven snow hopefully Trump cleans that up Yes, I don't think anyone disagrees - but, please, note the post #7 by tlozo. However, it is ironic that in this particular instance the CIA did much less than is generally thought, whereas an operative - Kermit Roosvelt - claimed to have done much more than he actually did.

1953 was a dangerous time and unstable time, the world was still recovering from WWII as the Korean war was being fought by Russia, China, America, the UN, North Korea, a year of Mau Maus, Mt. Everest, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg executed, Stalin dying, Khrushchev, the Hydrogen bomb, some rationing lifted in England .
