NRA responds to Donald Trump saying "you can't have guns"
Newsweek via MSN ^ | January 28, 2026 | Jordan King

While talking to reporters about the shooting on Tuesday, Trump said: “You can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns. It’s a very unfortunate thing.”

The NRA later posted on X: “The NRA unequivocally believes that all law-abiding citizens have a right to keep and bear arms anywhere they have a legal right to be.” There have been repeated clashes between guns rights groups and some members of the Trump administration. FBI Director Kash Patel said on Sunday: “You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want.”

The National Association for Gun Rights said the statement “sets a dangerous precedent for Second Amendment rights.”

Patel later clarified his position in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, saying: “We truly, fully support the Second Amendment—people’s right to bear arms.”

But he added regarding the situation in Minnesota: “We have to ask people what’s prudential, what’s smart. And it’s not smart to go out there with a fully loaded weapon… we’re just saying be careful and be reasonable.”

I really don't understand why every time this starts to settle down the administration says something else they have to walk back. Just keep quiet.

My take on what he said was that one really can’t be out getting into physical conflict with law enforcement while packing a pistol and not expect something very, very bad to happen. Just my take.

The administration needs to be more careful to draw the distinction between "Constitutionally permissible", "Legal", and "Smart".

Not everything that the Constitution permits is legal everywhere. Know the local rules.

And certainly not everything that is permitted or legal is smart.

IMO, the smart thing in this case is to stay the hell out of a violent protest. Carrying a firearm and going out intentionally looking for trouble is likely to be successful.

Are we supposed to believe Trump is anti-gun?

Surely, you can't be series.

“the administration says something else they have to walk back. Just keep quiet.”

It shows that Trump isn’t a true believer in conservative issues like the 2A; it isn’t a deeply held principle for him. And that’s OK with me as long as he’s DOES the right thing. In tricky situations where guns are involved he needs to consult with a Constitutional advisor before he open his yap.

Why are supposed rights activist so clueless at times.

Trump was very much speaking to the concept of bringing guns to know violent protests and the idea of seeking to get involved. I agree with him, you have no business bringing a gun to that, concealed carry or not.

In fact, anyone who has “concealed carry” and has taken courses has been taught to literally avoid that very thing, you avoid the violence, not go looking for it.

Seems a selective quote. I haven’t found the full quote but I’m willing to bet he said something to the effect of going out to protest and confront law enforcement while armed.

I believe Bureaucrats should not be given Social Media rights. They keep stepping in it. They don’t know how to communicate. And they DEFINITELY don’t care about the law.

Govt Staff attorney Bill Assalyi posted on X “If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you. Don’t do it!” The NRA chastised a govt lawyer arguing, basically, that saying screw the 2nd Amendment when it comes to ICE is bad form: https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4363863/posts

You need context.

Pretti's own father told him not to do anything stupid...That tells us the "frame of Mind" that Pretti was in...

This is a case for "Bull". His clients would be the DHS guys.

Trump is right and using common sense, if your intent is to go and confront and attempt to disrupt law enforcement activity, you are abetting the prospect of being arrested, and if you are carrying a loaded weapon, you may put your own life in danger. A permit to carry is not a permit to disrupt legal law enforcement activity carrying a weapon.

My thoughts too. If you are observing then concealed carry should be fine. If you plan to fight with law enforcement then you should know that having a gun may make the outcome even worse.

As for the spare magazine, many instructors say that you should have two spare magazines. What if your first magazine fails to feed after the first shot? What if you are attacked by a gang having more people than your mag capacity?

Well, you can have a gun, going to protest or insurrection.

But it is very unwise!

Around here, in gun friendly AZ, some idiots paraded with guns during some right wing protests. It was legal, and nobody got hurt, but it gave ammo to those lefties “news people”. All they were reporting was “See, armed people, they are ready to kill everybody, be scared!”
No very good idea!

And LEO’s are definitely taking precautions around armed people. I do not blame them, too many of them got killed!

You cannot bring gun to Trump rally, that will get you into trouble.
So getting gun to anti ICE rally, I see some similarities here!
