Kash Patel is at the center of another embarrassing fiasco after the FBI released a person of interest detained over the mass shooting at Brown University.
The FBI had wrongfully detained a 24-year-old Army sniper whose name and photo was leaked to the press by cops, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha admitted on Sunday.
A gunman opened fire during a review session for an introductory economics final exam at around 4pm on Saturday. He killed two students including Ella Cook, 19, vice president of the Ivy League school's Republican club, and injured nine others.
Forty-eight hours later, the FBI is back at square one and Patel is under scrutiny over the botched arrest - which echoes his pattern of premature announcements including a short-lived suspect after Charlie Kirk's assassination.
Patel bragged about how the FBI had used its advanced cell phone tracking technology to detain the suspect at a hotel in Rhode Island, posting on X on Sunday.
The soldier allegedly traveled with a firearm from Wisconsin, but just hours after his arrest it was announced he would be freed.
Investigative experts warn that authorities must now start from scratch, reviewing all the evidence again after they were led to the wrong individual.
Patel has earned the nickname 'Keystone Kash' - a reference to the bumbling Keystone Cops of slapstick film fame - because of his pattern of making premature announcements about the FBI's successes. Most infamously, Patel announced on X just hours after Kirk's killing that 'the subject' was in custody.
But the individual was released just two hours later with no charges. It would be another 48 hours before cops captured the real suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.

Bondi and Patel have never failed to disappoint.
For real? Big Media fabrication?
Yep. I’m finally at the point where I believe Trump has screwed the pooch. If he doesn’t get things turned around by April, the GOP can kiss it goodbye.
You always agree with PravdABDNC? Wonder why they want Kash gone with their snarky little nickname?
I do not believe Patel was in any way...the lead agency.
When your trying to be transparent and timely, your going to get information out there that is a mistake. When you don’t get information out there, it causes everyone to say it’s a cover-up.
Kash Patel tries to get updates and information to the public, and that has as many problems as holding on to it for to long. I think that FBI director has some learning to do on timing, but I appreciate him at least trying to keep the public informed.
“...he FBI had used its advanced cell phone tracking technology to detain the suspect at a hotel in Rhode Island...”
A computer is only as good as its program. It spit out a name and number and they went whole hog..............
Providence Police Department was the lead agency.
“It would be another 48 hours before cops captured the real suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.”
They didn’t ‘capture’ anybody. His family turned him in..............
I mean seriously- everyone bitches about assassins that were on the FBI’s “watch list” and nothing was done about them....better off erring on the side of caution...
This reads just like a smear piece. The FBI looked into a suspect, decided it wasn’t him, and released him. He wasn’t announced as a suspect. He wasn’t “named and shamed” by Patel; that appears to simply be the media found out someone was detained and got a leak as to who.
People love to mob up on Kash
Not a big deal. Cell phone tracking led them to a guy. They arrested him, checked him out, and released him. It wasn’t him. Would be curious how he got caught up in it. Was he there? Was he a witness?
The Left (and apparently many on the Right) will pounce on any action or non action to paint it as negative. Let’s see, prior to Patel, we had two directors who lied to Congress and the American people, were corrupt to the core, went after political enemies, weaponized the FBI and hid information to protect Democrats. We now have a director who is a little too fact to get in front of the cameras but lying to people, is not corrupt and has not weaponized the FBI. For all of you crying about this, I’ll take Patel over the other two any day.
And so many here were demanding to know the guy’s name before the gun had barely cooled.
Horseshit. It’s called being safe rather than sorry. If they hadn’t picked any suspect up, people would have been screaming for their skin too. You can’t make malcontents happy.
It looked and felt wrong from the beginning. No motivation at all. I feel bad for the young man misidentified. I hope this does not screw up his life moving forward.
Patel and Bongino both said Epstein definitely killed himself and that there’s nothing to see in his files so why would I take them seriously on anything else?
Wait. Whut?
So the 24 year-old Army intel guy whose name and face were spread everywhere was NOT the perp?
God, I hate social media.
