Israel and Hamas will begin indirect talks in Egypt on Monday after Hamas said it would accept parts of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, including releasing all remaining Israeli hostages. I spoke with my colleague Josh Keating about what we know about the deal and its chances of succeeding for Vox’s daily newsletter, Today, Explained. Our conversation is below, and you can sign up for the newsletter here for more conversations like this.
What happened on Friday? Is the war actually about to end?
On Friday, Hamas issued a response to the 20-point Gaza peace plan, which had been put forward by President Donald Trump last Monday and which had already been provisionally agreed to by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hamas announced that it had agreed to the deal, including the release of all its surviving hostages and the remains of those who have died, but stated that it wished to begin talks to “discuss the details” of the arrangement.
Though Trump appears to have interpreted this as a “yes,” skeptics in both Israel and the US suspect the group is just playing for time and will bog down the process in negotiation over the details.
On Saturday, following a demand from Trump, the Israeli military was ordered to halt its operations in Gaza in order to prepare for the prisoner release, though some strikes still took place.

What makes this plan different from previous failed efforts?
Unlike previous ceasefires, this deal would see all of Hamas’s remaining Israeli hostages, taken on October 7, 2023, released at once. It would also see Hamas give up its weapons and its governance...

Hamas calling Trump’s bluff?
From Amir Tsarfati:
Significant difficulties in talks in Sharm el-Sheikh. Hamas refuses the disarmament clause, demands a full withdrawal of the IDF from the Gaza Strip, and insists on agreeing on all the outline’s clauses before releasing the hostages. In fact, Hamas has not moved from its positions in previous rounds and does not accept the Trump outline.
There are disagreements within the organization, but currently the side with the tougher stance is prevailing. Israel is disappointed with Qatar and Turkey, who promised to bring Hamas’s agreement to the outline, and so far again have failed to deliver.
Trump had set a deadline, but that proved ineffective because once Hamas said “let’s negotiate” the deadline was allowed to come and go. It’s clear Hamas does not want to negotiate so just let Israel go there and finish the job. Turn Gaza into a large grassy field be done with the whole “two state” solution. It’ll never work.
Hamas does not want peace so the war will continue.
Hamas can’t keep Trump, Israel, and the rest of the world on a string for much longer.
One would think.
At some point, it’s damn the torpedos (Farragut at Mobile Bay, referring to floating mines), full speed ahead!
The Fakestinian “leadership” is Hellbent on forcing more and more violence — no matter how many Fakestinians are hurt.
Meanwhile, Egypt has grossly violated its “peace” treaty with Israel by (1) moving significant military forces into the agreed demilitarized Sinai area and
(2) blockading the gaza district so that almost no Fakestinians (many of whom trace from Egypt anyway) can get out (neither to Egypt itself nor to anywhere else on earth willing to let them in)... this is both inhumane and downright evil. Those wishing to be non-combatantants have a right to leave battle zones
This war will never end unless the Arabs destroy every living Hebrew in the world. The may take a recess to regroup and rearm but that it.
Is the war about to end? That depends: have Hamas suddenly developed the ability to negotiate in good faith?
History says no. They only talk peace when their backs are to the wall, and then only to buy time to escape, regroup, re-arm, and plan their next atrocity.

There! Fixed it!
Very true.
hamass will never give up weapons with which to murder Jews.
I give it a 0% chance of success.
Sadly.
“Significant difficulties in talks in Sharm el-Sheikh. Hamas refuses the disarmament clause, demands a full withdrawal of the IDF from the Gaza Strip, and insists on agreeing on all the outline’s clauses before releasing the hostages.”
Perfect! Negotiate with the Arab Nations, get an agreement, then watch Hamas do the last second bait and switch and refused to honor the agreement. This has happened so many times in history it’s not even worth mentioning. Now, nations like Qatar and Turkey look completely impotent leaders and enablers of Islamic Terrorism. No better way to help Israel continue to obliterate Gaza that that!!
It won’t end till the antichrist gets here, and then only a short while.
Calling it “Israel’s War” says it all.
I’m not an Israel First type - and I would love less US involvement.
However, the way I see it, certain enemies - like Hamas - are like a wasp nest in the eaves of your home - you can’t make peace - you’re not safe until you exterminate them.
I think we should let Israel do just that but without our help. We need to focus on our own exterminations: drug cartels, Antifa, deep state, etc..
muslim animals will never stop murdering kafirs
