France to recognise Palestinian state at UN general assembly, Macron says

France will recognise a Palestinian state in September at the UN general assembly, Emmanuel Macron has said.

The French president announced the decision on X on Thursday evening, saying he hoped it would bring peace to the region.

Macron published a letter sent to Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, confirming France’s intention to become the first major western power to recognise a Palestinian state.

“True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine,” Macron said.

“I will make this solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly next September.”

The decision is likely to spark anger in Israel and Washington. In a diplomatic cable in June, the US said it opposed any steps that would unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state.

What’s particularly funny, is “Palestinian” used to be an Arab slur for Jews, and was such until around 1970.

You probably know all this, but for the other readers:

The whole area was the Ottoman Empire, and this was just part of the province of Syria. The occupants for 2,000 years were generally Jews in Jerusalem and scattered about, with some Christians in Bethlehem, and some wandering Bedouins.

The Arabs in Gaza are migrant Egyptians who came for work in the early 1900s as Jews turned essentially abandoned land into something modern.

The entire “Palestinian” switch-a-roo really depends on willful ignorance in the West.

My first visit to Israel in the ‘70s I met some old people who still had British Mandate IDs. The ID papers identified Jews as ‘Palestinian’ and Muslims as ‘Arab’.
