Jeff Bezos
@JeffBezos I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.
I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.
I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.
I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.

Some things should change with shutting down USAID...
It sounds good. We’ll see.
Get rid of that “Democracy Dies In Darkness” BS at the top of your front page.
Sad to say of people I consider my religious brethren (Bezos, Zuckerberg, et al) that they too easily find themselves on the side of political power (see Al Andalus / The Spanish Inquisition) rather than consistently on the side of the principle of Liberty.
How many of the current staff will quit? How many will stay to sabotage?
Those viewpoints are only underserved in the old media - see Tagline. Hope his note changes that, but I doubt it.
Yup—it should read “We were insane leftist propagandists. We apologize.”
“I am of America and for America, and proud to be so.”
For someone who started his business in his garage and wound up to where he is now, his choice should be very clear and easy to make.
BTTT
Notice the reaction from David Shipley.
Not only, “No.” But “Hell, NO!”
David Shipley, Washington Post Editorial Page Editor, REFUSES to print opinions disagreeing with HIS opinions.
Or, by extension, treating Islam as a religion instead of what it truly is...a socio-political system masquerading as one, which demands that its adherents subjugate, enslave or kill those who reject it?
“...two pillars: personal liberties and free markets...”
So...not necessarily going to champion that whole “Christ is King” thing?
If you cannot be trusted to be armed, you should not be running around loose.
And would greatly increase the death rate on alternate means of transport.
I didn’t even think about that.
I’m not a foresight kind of thinker :)
Of course that would be an outcome.
Didn’t occur to me for some reason.
It’s a lot better message than the one WaPo has been pushing all these years: “All for the State. Nothing outside the State.”
Weathervane much Jeffy??
Watching leftist heads exploding could be a pay-to-view event.
“ I applaud Bezos for doing this.”
I do too. You don’t make money selling to a small audience. Eliminating bias, especially in opinion columns will bring in more readers.
Jeff Bezos: We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.
