View comments A university has removed the term Anglo-Saxon from module titles in a bid to 'decolonise the curriculum.'

The University of Nottingham is removing the expression from a number of courses, including History and English Literature, and replacing it with the more favoured 'Early Medieval English.'

Academics have been campaigning to replace Anglo-Saxon with 'Early Medieval English' due to concern the former suggests a distinct, native Englishness.

I write this as a person who graduated from a major Midwestern University with honors in history. One of my main areas of study was English history. On the basis of that knowledge I say this program of historical obliteration is an abomination to the English people and their glorious history. The Anglo-Saxons were a definite ethnic group, and the first great group of invaders who entered England after the Romans left. Thereafter the Vikings, also known as the Danes, invaded and attempted to conquer much of England. One of the main things English, through England's greatest king, Alfred the Great, did was to fight the Danes to a standstill. However, with that large Danish population and natural crossbreeding that occurred between the Danes and the Anglo-Saxons a pretty much distinctive English group evolved. Indeed, the Danish presence was so powerful that England even had a Danish king, Canute. This abomination obliterates all of that wonderful history and is a total disgrace to whom ever concocted it. It's nothing but an anti-historical monstrosity designed to obliterate the great history of England and English civilization, from which our own civilization primarily springs.

How is early medieval English a better description?

If they are trying to be politically correct here, doesn’t reference to early medieval time periods, suggest an approval or endorsement of Life and times in the middle ages? To be politically correct they certainly don’t want to suggest that.

The university scene today is right out of the twilight zone. These universities are jammed full of Communist, Socialist, and anti-American, anti Caucasian hate preachers. That is exactly what the indoctrination is all about in most of these schools today.

I just finished reading a biography of JRR Tolkien. Tolkien was, among other things, Oxford’s Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon

Of course he was also fluent/expert at Old Icelandic, Celtic, Greek and Latin, as well as fluent in German and Spanish

this move by this university is 100% pure Marxism, erasure of history.

For all my respect for English Civilization, present post-modern culture and the regime now in the UK should be viewed as an enemy, or at minimum, a country undergoing dangerous revolution, like Russia in 1918.

It’s a dead wrong, totally just totally false description. England was divided essentially into two peoples, the Anglo-Saxons and the Danes who spent a great deal of time warring with each other until they finally came together. Then, on top of that, there was the Norman French invasion of 1066 that added a whole new ruling class under William the Conqueror and his descendents.

English is a language of a colonial nation with a colonialist past. Time for these "academics" to speak and write in another language which is not associated with colonialism. Cancel classes in the colonialist English language! (sarc)

So, what's out? French was a colonial power. Germany, yeah? Spain most definitely. Italian too and the pesky Catholics continue their "colonialism." Dutch? Nope, 'cause they were all European colonialists.

Arabic? Laughter out loud at that, because among the great colonialists and conquers of history are the Arab-speaking.

So what's a dumbo English Leftist to do? Dump English, a colonialist language. End of academia in Britain. But then again the Leftists are killing it anyway.

I hear a lot of liberals supporting “decolonization” and yet none of them want to decolonize their own countries and remove foreign invaders. So I guess they really don’t support decolonization at all but they just hate White people (even if they are White themselves)

Just saw a couple of episodes of The Unexplained.

Stone circles and stone monoliths in England and Europe by the thousands were created there by people 4,000 and 6,000 years ago. No way of knowing what they were doing or why. Or their daily lives. They were there long before the Pyramids, Moses and Christ.
