If you’ve visited a grocery store in the last year, chances are high that you saw single-use plastic bags swapped for another reusable bag (also made with plastic, but we’ll get to that later). Or maybe your local grocery store hasn’t even made this trade-off, despite the law stating they must do so. On your walk home from that very store, you probably saw plastic bags still littered along the street.
This is all part of the current problem with single-use plastic bans on bags, straws and takeout containers across the U.S. They are disjointed and, for the average person, pretty confusing to understand — which is why they’re not working.
It’s commendable that states have taken the initiative to develop these bans, but they ultimately highlight the urgent need for national coordination in addressing plastic pollution in a way that has a long-term impact.

Do stores in California not have plastic bags? I do a lot of shopping and don’t know of stores without plastic bags except Trader Joes, which has paper bags.
Paper then plastic and now back to paper. Only the paper bags now are so thin that they are less than single use. They rip wide open when you try to remove them from the cart.
Plastic bags are outlawed in NY. When visiting my parents l, I bring them a stash of free state grocery bags.
Actually no.
Occasionally I find a glass bottle that has broken or some light plastic thingy that fell from garbage/recycling truck but rarely litter.
Probably because I live in a civilized area.
They said use plastic and now whine about it.

Speaking of way bigger containers, look at packaging from sales at Amazon and other online vendors. My wife does a lot of online buying. A couple days ago she received a large box, about a foot tall and wide, and a foot and a half long. At the bottom of the packing material was her item, a one inch square by 3 inch tall box of some cosmetic. Other vendors like TEMU would put that in an envelope for delivery into your mailbox. But not Amazon.
I wonder, what do they ship Styrofoam in?
Since every newspaper has gone bankrupt or digital, I think the trees are safe.
I look for the convention totes in our local thrift store. Very handy! No matter how many I bring home there is always a good use for them.
of course not :)!
I use them for my bandage wrap changes by my home health nurse,, for my ostomy changes, for my body wipes, and for mmy kitchen trash!
Yep! We were accused of killing tress with paper bags.
When the stores changed to plastic, then we were told paper bags were more eco-friendly.
Now, we have to use thick, reusable bags. Someday, we’ll be told they’re destroying the environment.
Then, maybe we’ll have paper bags again.
I have those damn monstrous Amazon boxes, too.
It takes 4 times more energy and wastes 50 times more water to make their new paper bags ,LOL
Ya those paper straws and wooden forks can’t stand them touching my lips
Paper always
Double bagged

California's stores have EXCELLENT plastic bags!
They're super big and thick. Really durable. Probably use about 5 times as much plastic as a regular grocery bag.
At $0.10 each, the cost increase to my grocery bill is negligible.
And I still only use them twice. First, to bring home my groceries and second as a trash can liner in the kitchen.
Same as I used the bags before.
Great job California with saving the environment!
Don’t forget all the time and water wasted washing garbage so they can call it recycling
