People are installing bollards in their driveways to protect their cars from thieves in Toronto

With car thefts at an all-time high in Toronto, some people are resorting to installing retractable bollards in their driveways — vertical posts to physically prevent their vehicles from being stolen.

According to the Toronto Police Service’s major crimes indicators dashboard, car thefts increased by 25.4 per cent in 2022. Insp. Paul Rinkoff described it as a “dramatic surge” in the city’s auto theft crisis over the past few years, with the number of vehicles stolen this year already skyrocketing.

“When you compare 2020 to 2023, we saw an increase of 54 per cent in relation to auto theft,” he told the National Post. “That means 9,795 vehicles stolen in 2022 and 12,170 vehicles stolen in 2023. From the beginning of March, when compared to last year, we’re seeing a 114 per cent increase with 1,495 cars already stolen in 2024.”

Amid the crisis, people are looking for more ways to prevent car thefts, with bollards becoming an increasingly popular option.

Remember when the FBI told you crime was down in Biden's America? Well, it looks like crime is booming in Canada.

In South Africa, some of the cars include flamethrowers. It discourages carjacking. Maybe we should be more like Africa. Seems like it’s happening.

And somehow they were unable to get a vote of no confidence in Castro’s son.

Batman had flamethrowers and retractable bollards where the Batcave outlet met the highway. I want that!

"People are installing bollards in their driveways to protect their cars from thieves in Toronto"

...and errant, Ukrainian-captained cargo ships that lose power.

Just disconnect some vital part (electrical) in the engine compartment. Thieves don’t want to spend time trouble shooting what’s wrong. My gramps told me that when he was a kid living in NYC.

The Middle Ages.

Learn it. Know it. Live it. With the return of Highwaymen, we are returning to feudalism. Walls. Castles. Moats.

It is all part of the govenrment’s plan to return us to Serfdom. I kid you not. Divide and conquer. Keep us in fear, and we will beg the lord of the realm to save us from being overrun by the Huns.

America is at the same state as ancient Rome when she fell. I no longer wonder how it happened as I am seeing it repeat in real time.

Yep. When I borrowed a friend’s F-350 once about 30 years ago to pull a trailer, he had me pop the fuse panel and remove two fuses each night. Said they could tow it, but can’t drive it away. I think it was a started solenoid and fuel injection.
Can’t remember.

Buy stick shift cars - they say hoodlums don’t know how to shift them and bail out when they discover it. I don’t even know if they make them anymore!

Can’t car thieves just remove the bollards..they look heavy but the owner must have to remove and replace them daily unless they’re like me and only drive their car once a week.

You can tell I don’t know anything about them except what I see in pictures by googling...

AND besides - aren’t Canadian owners supposed to leave the keys to their cars on the porch to make it easier on the thugs??

Well, in the old days, you just removed the rotor from the distributor. Or simpler, the wire running into the distributor. But now cars don’t have distributors. Not nearly as easy as it was before the government regulations got out of hand.

Yes, there are still some cars with manual transmissions being made.

Certain Kias and Hyundais are wired by using a simple USB connection and there are videos showing how simple and fast it is. literally seconds and they’re gone. Kia and Hyundai are being sued over this. Also insurance rates on them are going skyward.

They’re the kind that retract into the ground and popup at the push of a buttton. Usually embedded in concrete.
