The San Francisco Center, once a thriving mall home to the largest Nordstrom in America, is a shell of its former self after a string of high-profile departures..
Staff and shoppers in the mall, where five more stores closed in January .. crime and falling foot traffic is ruining the palatial building..
The mall lost $1 billion in value last year
...
The mall's cavernous, marble-floored atrium is eerily quiet. There's not a single shopper in sight and a litany of abandoned stores lay mostly empty, but for a few leftover cardboard boxes or fading signs which serve as a reminder of the former occupants.
...
a few years ago the luxurious complex would have been heaving with shoppers ...
...
Businesses have left in droves ... occupancy is at a measly 25 percent ... the homeless have moved in and drug-taking and crime have risen.
...
'Five years ago, this place was thriving,' Tara Button .. she and her daughter cut their visit short – with no plans to return again.
...
Nordstrom's closure .. once occupied 350,000 feet of the San Francisco Center across five floors – making it the largest Nordstrom in America.
Two months earlier in June, Westfield announced it would give up ownership of the mall, which once bore its name, and turn over the property to its lender. A cutting statement blamed the 'deteriorating situation in downtown San Francisco' and 'unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees'.
...
falling foot traffic and rising crime made the departures inevitable.
....
San Francisco's dismally high office vacancy rate, which was 35.9 percent in December. That situation is compounded by the departure of several large companies, including accounting giant KPMG

At least they’re actually attributing it to crime. Around here, they can’t be honest - they say they close because they’re not near highways.
As if the highways moved away or something.
Soon to be command and control bases our enemies will be quartered and managed from at the local levels. Easy to fence and secure.
I always enjoyed a whiff of urine before going to Nordstrom’s for champagne and to listen to the piano player.
The Democrats have ruled California for several decades now.
You’d think the public would catch on, but that just doesn’t materialize.
I was born in this state. Its potential is amazing.
It has been severely damaged by the enemies of our nation.
Very Hemmingway-esque literary statement there. Well done!
You lost me at “I always enjoyed a whiff of urine ...” ;-)
Doesn’t sound like anything that bringing in a few thousand illegal aliens won’t fix.
While it may be a high crime area, I’m guessing the stores closed because the Internets and Amazon is killing the malls.
Ours is practically empty now, and will probably be torn down soon to be replaced by condos. Part of it already has been.............
There's simply nothing to stop San Francisco from continuing its decline like other American cities. The dotcom money is gone. The only industries left are the Grievance Industry and the Rape-The-Taxpayer Industry.

Great plan SF, kill the mall and reopen as homeless shelter!
Thanks. That’s about it.
More of Newsom’s planned demolition of California...
Did I say it was a huge state? One time I decided to drive to San Francisco from San Diego with some buddies and it was similar in distance to driving from NYC to Florida and we were still only about halfway up the state.
It's a crime how leftist politicians have ruined it.
I had a great experience out there but already could see the seeds of decline.
My Bioscience - Venture Capitalist - liberal relative saw it coming 6 years ago and quietly got out. Moved to Boulder, CO, heh.
The term is "death spiral", and once you've made a couple of turns it doesn't stop until you hit the bottom.
And it's not a so-called 'dead mall' in some forgotten corner of America.
They're working on that...
It’s hard to point to any large American city worth visiting. They all suck.
“we were still only about halfway up the state”
And the real Northern California - which actually is North of San Francisco - is basically empty.
So why is everyone crowded into a couple of hyper dense population centers? Bizarre.
But tell nobody. Can still buy cheap houses in Redding. They just look like crap.
If only ten of those cities were nuked, you would have peace on earth for a thousand years. /spit
