Gov. Kathy Hochul declares war against NYC congestion toll beaters with ‘fraud’ proposal in new budget

Drivers who evade the controversial $15 congestion pricing toll to enter Midtown Manhattan will be treated like criminals under legislation introduced by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Hochul included a “toll fraud” proposal in her $233 billion state budget plan.

The measure would allow cops to charge drivers with Class A misdemeanor toll theft — defined as fraudulently attempting to obtain a credit, discount or exemption from tolls.

Scammers who evade paying tolls valued at more than $1,000 could get slapped with a Class E felony and a Class D felony for pocketing tolls valued at more than $3,000.

Looters of retail stores, however, have nothing to fear.

These people are lunatics.

In her defense, NY has a lot of empty jail cells now that they’ve decriminalized crimes committed by the Amish - so this will help repopulate their jails, at least to some extent.

Is this where people are using devices to obscure their license plates from readers/cameras?

"By the way, how do they avoid the tolls?"

That's what I want to know. There are no toll booths. Most everyone has EZ-pass.

Do people evade Tolls by not having an E-ZPass transponder?

I don’t know the mechanics of how that works. ! Do they get a bill every month for the amount of tolls that they racked up during the month? Does non payment of such a bill then create the offense of evading tolls?

It seems that this problem came up because they did away with people collecting tolls at toll booths.

Some folks hide their license plates. Others just throw away the bills when they come in the mail. I use a rotating license plate myself.

Just kidding, of course. I wouldn’t drive into NYC for any reason.

I have a foolproof solution.

Stay away from New York City
Stay far away.

It works for me!

So much for putting out the Welcome mat...Thankfully, I’ve been to Times Square (2005), so that’s off my bucket list. Always wanted to tour DC, see the monuments, the Smithsonian, etc. THAT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN NOW. This country is going down the tubes.

About to mention this very topic, turnstile jumping, I thought I read that it is a court approved right to jump and not pay.

On a bucket list?

Anyone who wants to see Times Square can simply go to a public restroom and look behind the toilet.

And all the loonies stabbing and shooting people, millions of rats, illegal invaders by the tens of thousands crapping all over the place, businesses fleeing. Good priorities.

The way people are fleeing NYC, the congestion will fix itself.

EZ-Pass charges $25.00 on credit card. As one drives through an invisible toll thingy, it deducts the toll from the $25.00. When there's only $10.00 left in account EZ-pass replenishes with $25.00. This is for cars, Trucks have a larger amount.

Those who don't have EZ=pass have to text to a number and they get a bill in the mail.

I drive to NYC and I have no clue where most of the toll areas are anymore.

One time I forgot the transponder. I was charged without having it with me. I'm at a loss how hochul can claim people aren't paying.

By the way, how do they avoid the tolls?

Living outside NYC and registering your vehicle in NYC, perhaps?

And since the law includes an exemption for emergency vehicles and disabled drivers; you can be sure that millions of people will be driving ambulances with handicapped tags on them to work.
