The Kremlin on Tuesday denied a report that President Vladimir Putin was ill, and laughed off persistent rumours that he used body doubles to cover for him in public appearances.
"Everything is fine with him, this is absolutely another fake," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about an unsourced report by a Russian Telegram channel, picked up by some Western media, that the president had suffered a serious health episode on Sunday evening.
The spokesman laughed in response to a further question about body doubles, and denied that Putin had any.

Even if Putin is in fact seriously ill, the war in Ukraine that he apparently started is still in progress. Absent Putin, the Russian leadership continues to prosecute the war as the economy withers and the Ruble is now worth only one US cent.

I don’t understand the motivation behind manufacturing these stories.
The most cursory reading about his designated successor, Dmitry Medvedev, would reveal the very last thing America would want is Putin being replaced.
It is not an if. That is the line of succession. Medvedev takes over as deputy. There is no magical alternative that appears. Putin’s party is United Russia. Medvedev is the head of the party.
The Russian Duma, established in 1993, has 450 seats. United Russia has 324 of these.
There is no world in which anyone but Medvedev or any other senior United Russia party guy (all of whom are much harder line than Putin) takes power if Putin is incapacitated.
Russia conducts itself for the benefit of Russia, not in accordance with US preferences. They are nationalists. Why would anyone be surprised at this?
Didn’t he die last year and then his corpse was fighting off an imminent coup until he died again? I remember reading all those stories right here on FR.
