Putin’s troops GIVE UP Chernobyl nuke site after five weeks in bungled invasion as dozens treated for radiation sickness

CHERNOBYL is back under the control of Ukrainian troops after Russian forces formally gave up the nuclear plant.

The site of the 1986 nuclear tragedy in northern Ukraine was captured in the opening days of the war, sparking fears of a major radioactive disaster as a result of heavy fighting around the plant.

Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom said on Thursday that all of the "outsiders" who had been occupying the plant have left.

It released a letter signed by the Russian National Guard in which custody of Chernobyl was handed back to Ukraine.

Earlier, it said that some Russian forces had set off towards the Belarusian border, suggesting that they had been driven away by radiation concerns.

"This morning, the invaders announced their intentions to leave the Chernobyl nuclear power plant," Energoatom said in a statement.

It also confirmed reports that Russian troops had dug trenches in the most contaminated part of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the Red Forest, receiving "significant doses" of radiation.

This is sounding a little bit like a Keystone Cops invasion.

I had occasion to work at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. You were not allowed to dig more than six inches into the soil. These idiots dug effing trenches.

This story sounds fabricated. The Russians didn’t forget about the Chernobyl melt-down or the exclusion zone.

Maybe.
The context of this seems to be a general withrawal. The Russians seem to have abandoned the Irpin river line entirely, as Uke forces are at Hostomel airport and over the river along the line, at least 1-2km past it. As the Ukes are in Hostomel the whole West Bank of the Dneiper position is becoming untenable for the Russians, and I wont be surprised to hear that the whole salient from the line of the E-40 on up is evacuating.

Also the long thin column from Sumy, formerly on the East bank of the Dneiper, seems to have withrawn to at least 30 km from Kiev.

This whole war was an utterly predictable disaster. How would Putin ever hold the Ukraine even if he DID manage to initially occupy the country?...impossible! Ukrainians are tough he should have known this! Morale, not size, matters.

Why impossible? In the areas currently under Russian control the population is supportive of the Russians.

Hanford has nothing like Chernobyl, unless you dug directly into a radioactive waste storage container.

And here I thought it was the Russians who were aglow with success.

They should have put up a sign saying “Gone Fission” as they retreated.

the Russians will be international pariahs for decades. They will have to beg the Chinese to be their friends.

I agree. The entire thing was so unnecessary. Unless they wipe out the entire population, Ukraine isn’t going anywhere. They can’t occupy and will never be able to get a puppet regime n there as long as US politicians use these countries as piggy banks.
