A ransom note, fingerprints and cell phone pings. How New York police tracked down a missing 9-year-old girl and the suspect in her disappearance

A ransom note dropped in the mailbox at the home of missing 9-year-old Charlotte Sena before dawn on Monday provided investigators an invaluable break in the case that ultimately led New York authorities to arrest a suspect and reunite the girl with her family after a frantic two-day search, state officials announced.

Fingerprints left behind on the note were instrumental in identifying suspect Craig Nelson Ross, Jr., 47, and tracking him to a residence where law enforcement arrested him Monday evening and immediately found Charlotte hidden in a cabinet, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced in a news conference.

At around 4:20 a.m. Monday, the suspect drove by the Sena family home and placed the ransom note in their mailbox, according to Hochul. Despite the early hour, Charlotte’s parent’s were still at the campsite searching for their daughter.

When state police discovered the note, they were able to recover fingerprints from the document and began running them through law enforcement databases to see if they could find a match, the governor said.

A hit came at 2:30 p.m., identifying the fingerprint as Ross’, the governor said. Ross’ fingerprint had been entered into the database for a 1999 incident of driving while intoxicated, she said.

Investigators then determined Ross may have been living in a residence behind his mother’s home. Two state and federal SWAT teams descended upon residence in helicopters, made entry and arrested Ross around 6:30 p.m., Hochul said. Charlotte was immediately found inside a cabinet.

In addition to the fingerprints, investigators also analyzed cell phone pings around the park at the time of Charlotte’s disappearance, Hochul told CNN Monday night. Additional insight came from park records, which contain information about visitors who paid an entrance fee or registered to camp overnight, she said.

It was first reported he was a sex offender, and then I believe that statement was retracted.

There hasn’t been an actual retraction that I can find.

Just a removal of the info.

NYS is hiding something.

My bet is the perp is well know to the state and LE.

And never should have been on the streets.

Clearly, law enforcement understood that the perp was from the area, could blend into the area quite well and knew the family.

In 2023, you aren’t getting very far without a camera spotting you somewhere.

And for whatever technology that we know about, they’ve got stuff 20 years into the future that they are already using/testing.
I can bet that they have used/tested/testing face recognition technology into every day street cameras.

And I wouldnt be surprised if they have capabilities of picking up sounds from all sorts of places and most likely have AI that can literally distinguish with major accuracy, a unique voice fingerprint of every human and can track a good chunk of our days verbal utterances.

That sounds like precisely the investigative process that should have been deployed to identify and prosecute the 2020 election fraudsters!

Probably not brilliant to publish all the mistakes a kidnapper makes.

I'll bet we only get less than 50% of the story, including the tech they used. Seriously, they didn't have the house staked out with multiple cars in the area to follow any suspicious cars, as everyone knows criminals tend to revisit the scene of the crime or those involved.

Isn’t it amazing to realize that our crack law enforcement teams have not be able to crack the source of the coke left in the White House. Go figure . . .

Thank God for someone ignorant about fingerprints. Probably not brilliant to publish all the mistakes a kidnapper makes.

Fingerprints and cellphone pings. Seriously, you don't carry a tracking device (cell phone) if you're trying to avoid being found. Ring cameras are another source of surveillance that is often overlooked by stupid criminals.

Neither cops, nor journalists are usually on the high end of the IQ spectrum.

Apparently his brother, Nelson, was arrested for stalking and photographing young girls a few years ago.

How is anyone ignorant of fingerprints? There’s a FB story with a pic of his older brother, who was arrested recently for stalking and photographing young girls. Too much chlorine in that gene pool, methinks.
