BREAKING: Supreme Court rules Alabama to redraw congressional districts
Associated Press ^ | 6/8/2023 | Mark Sherman

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a surprising 5-4 ruling in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case, ordering the creation of a second district with a large Black population.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined with the court’s liberals in affirming a lower-court ruling that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act in an Alabama congressional map with one majority Black seat out of seven congressional districts in a state where more than one in four residents is Black.

But then, Kavanaugh voted to overturn Roe Vs. Wade. So there’s that.

Every justice has a mixed voting record. You are not going to find any justice, or any politician for that matter, who votes the conservative way 100% of the time. So there’s that.

Actually this tends to create less democrat districts as it puts them all into one group that vote 95% democrat. Having said that if the overwhelming population is GOP and they are winning by 55% in all districts then yes this will net more Dem seats.

BTW: This is ridiculous. They say we can’t discriminate based on color but yet that’s EXACTLY what the supreme court did.

So that would be an 8 seat flip to the Rats. The GOP only controls the House by 9 seats?

Say goodbye to GOP control in 2024.

I’m not a Harvard or Yale law school schmuck, but it seems to me drawing voter districts based on race is unconstitutional and inherently racist. Kavanaugh has been a foul ball from the gitgo, as is his dancing partner Roberts.

It never fails. Republican presidents always manage to slip a stealth liberal onto the Supreme Court.

O’Conner, Souter, Roberts, and now Kavanaugh.

This is actually a good thing.

In Florida, the last time Democrats were in power to redraw Congressional Districts, they created ‘Black Majority’ districts, using some wild lines, some splitting apartment complexes and going down the middle of rivers.

What that caused is they actually took away DEMOCRAT VOTERS from adjacent districts to create these Black Majority Districts, making adjacent districts more REPUBLICAN.

Then when Republicans took over the State Legislature, the Dems fully expected the Republicans to demolish these black districts, but they didn’t.

So don’t fret over Alabama..............................

we pay these people to rationally review each case and come up with a just and independent opinion which is sometimes right and sometime proves to be wrong.

even the unwise latina has been right once and a while.

“the judge let constipation go to his head in his wife’s aggravation you soon end up dead... its the same old story same old song and dance my friend”

according to Aerosmith that is.

And yet, Kavanaugh voted to overturn Roe Vs. Wade. Do we give any credit for that, or do we only focus on this one case as canceling out all other opinions he has ever rendered???

However most tend to drift left over time, with a few staying anchored.

So far as I know, Thomas is probably the only one who has arguably drifted right in my lifetime, or my parent’s life time.

I think he was worth the fight if only to do in Roe, but expect that from here on out he will largely amount to an empty Suiter, if you know what I mean.

That is a natural trajectory for someone who went from Catholic to quasi-Jesuit to Episcopalian.

Making the Africans the majority in Alabama. Nice. Too many recreational drugs again. Won’t be long before we’re going to need a White Caucus in Congress.

What this guarantees is that Alabama will always now have 5 GOP vs. 2 DEM. The DEMs like Jones who won the Senate race in Alabama a few years ago will not have a chance to win in 1 of those non-minority congressional districts.

So in a district with say 25%-30% Black vote, a DEM like the Jones, or go back to the 80’s the late Senator Heflin of Alabama or Sam Nunn of Georgia could win in Southern States.

So while you are giving the Black voters and Black congressional caucus another member, you are guaranteeing 5 GOP seats in Alabama going forward.

The old southern yellow dawg democrat who were strong on Defense, believed in government programs that helped working people (not welfare), believed in supporting small business and family business vs. the Corporate interest which in my grandfathers time were associated with the New England GOP types like the Bush family, etc.

Not in Alabama.

Under the same standard:

AL: +1 dem
LA: +1 dem
SC: +1 dem
GA: +1 dem

per Dave Wasserman.
